Job Overview:
The Spartanburg operation is a state of the art coffee roasting and pod packaging facility along with a full beverage distribution center. The site is the largest KDRP manufacturing and distribution location. The site operation will function on the foundational principles of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance); principles of Lean manufacturing; and the power of High Performance Teams. All associates at the Spartanburg site will have specific accountability and ownership to not only the site operations, however, to the functional business operations that they are part of. The site will run on state of the art enterprise information technology systems and manufacturing execution systems; and with highly automated processing equipment, packaging equipment, and material movement equipment; and very standardized lean processes.

SUMMARY

The Coffee Processing Engineer / Packaging Engineer is responsible for the development and implementation of technical solutions, standards and innovative tools for the receipt, storage, roasting, grinding and transfer of coffee for the site. This role will ensure the use of Total Productive Maintenance in the daily operations of coffee processing. This position along with the master roaster will be the site subject matter experts for coffee processing. This role will work closely with the multisite engineering, R+D, commercialization and IT to ensure the functionality and reliability of the coffee processing area of the site. This role will lead the identification of and carry out continuous improvement projects in coffee processing so the site can meet financial as well as capacity objectives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Large amount (75%) of standing and walking on production floor, with small amounts of office work and computer work required (25% of the workday). Requires ability to travel occasionally

Requirements:

  • Four year College degree required (engineering/manufacturing preferred) plus 3-5 years’ experience in a process based manufacturing environment.
  • TPM and/or Lean Manufacturing training a plu

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule, lead and facilitate Kaizen Events and other CI continuous improvement projects in coffee processing to enhance operational performance using Lean Manufacturing tools when carrying out projects (root cause analysis, A3, SMED, Kaizen, DMAIC, etc.)
  • Participate on multifunctional continuous improvement project teams; contributing to project activities with the Production, Maintenance, Distribution Center, Quality Assurance, and office departments.
  • Work with the Training and Development Leader to build training content and organize training sessions for training and coaching all associates in the coffee processing technologies and processes
  • Develop and put in place tools for measuring equipment/process performance and evaluating continuous improvement project results;
  • Create and Implement design improvements for coffee processing systems including mechanical, electrical, process, IT, OT systems.
  • Conduct periodic audits to verify the proper functioning of established coffee processing processes and systems
  • Provide back up support for Operations, Maintenance and Material Handling Coaches
  • Coach and teach the sites high performance teams in the area of coffee processing
  • Share and adapt best practices with other company manufacturing units
  • Report food safety, quality and regulatory compliance to plant or division personnel with authority to initiate action.
