DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW

This position is a technical and managerial role- responsible for creating and driving technical projects and demonstrating leadership within the packaging innovation function of the Consumer Self Care International OTC business.
We are looking for someone with a proven record of executing work plans and driving for results in a variety of settings. A proven communication- teamwork- and people development skillset is essential in this role- which operates in a cross-functional environment.
You will be responsible for packaging innovation development and collaborating with Business Unit Partners and cross functional peers to support CSCI OTC long term strategy where packaging will/can be influential.
This position will also manage a small team of packaging engineers.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field required.
  • 6 – 10+ years of experience in packaging development roles of increasing responsibility ideally in self-care OTC CPG. 5 years in packaging innovation role with 3 years of experience managing a team with an innovation focus.
  • Familiarity with variety of packaging conversion processes, materials and formats, and commercial sterilization processes to manufacture shelf stable foods strongly preferred.
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail and able to adapt quickly to changing priorities and unexpected requests.
  • Strong understanding of Design of Experiments and Human Centered Design
  • Experience in consumer self-care products preferred
  • Prior experience operating in regulated manufacturing environment preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patents and OTC product regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage outside contractors and suppliers
  • Working knowledge of Packaging and drafting software including TOPS, AutoCAD, Solid Works and ArtiosCAD.
  • Complete understanding and application of technical Packaging principles.
  • Operate autonomously in the following areas:
  • Drawing, die line and pallet configuration development
  • Packaging material and finished goods specifications development
  • Prototype and package mock-up development
  • Planning and execution of packaging distribution testing
  • Planning and execution of test protocols for packaging material and component evaluations, validations (IQ/OQ/PQ)
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with associates and stakeholders globally; demonstrated ability to work with senior leadership, multi-national or virtual teams, and frontline organization
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute design of experiments
  • Willingness to travel 30%

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, evaluate, and develop consumer centric packaging solutions that meet business objectives. Work in collaboration with Category teams to ensure successful transfer for implementation.
  • Provide packaging science expertise to independently develop new consumer products packaging in the cosmetic, new drug OTC or combination drug/device categories to replicate and/or improve upon national brand products, provide advanced or innovative consumer benefits, or avoid existing intellectual property.
  • Be consumer driven and elevate Innovative Packaging to help solve consumer pain points
  • Identify new product packaging opportunities and/or technologies, assess new technologies, businesses, and products to determine fit with existing business and marketing strategy; identify, evaluate, and develop suppliers for commercialization of new products; and research and assess intellectual property and regulatory issues related to new products packaging with the assistance of counsel and Regulatory Affairs.
  • Identify needs for packaging technologies and develop applications for new packaging technologies in collaboration with Emerging Technologies team.
  • Identify suppliers with key technologies required in manufacturing new packaging formats, interface with suppliers and take a lead role in process development, prototype batching, scale-up, process validation and transfer efforts.
  • Contribute to Packaging Technology and Innovation Pipeline and category Packaging Strategies.
  • Manage technical timelines- provide timely communication- raise issues and risks- and develop contingency plans leveraging strong project management skills
  • Responsible for identifying- defining- and solving technical packaging challenges
  • Collaborate and partners with suppliers to identify new technology opportunities- optimizing the utilization supplier resources and tools
  • Elevate the competence and know-how of junior developers through training- coaching- and external networking
  • Establish self as a technical subject matter expert in packaging materials- applications- testing and problem-solving
  • Management of junior staff including creation of development plans- building teamwork- and balancing of workload to help deliver in-year and pipeline projects
  • Drive engagement for respective team while partnering with peers
  • Supports the Packaging R&D Leadership Team in the implementation of key Packaging Development initiatives.
