Description:
A vacancy has arisen for a Paralegal/Legal Executive in the Dispute Resolution Department in the Healthcare, Public and Regulatory Team.
Based in Edinburgh the candidate will be expected to undertake a range of work within the team which covers medical negligence, personal injury, professional regulation and public law. The work will include providing support to the legal team involving file management, attending to court procedures including preparing, intimation and lodging relevant court documents in the Court of Session and the Sheriff Court, taking client precognitions and a wide range of legal administrative support.
You will be responsible for:
- Prioritising tasks to fit with given timescales/deadlines
- All file management – opening, closing, letters of engagement, setting up cases from the outset, managing iManage and Datarooms.
- Editing and maintaining template documents, drafting standard documents and letters as required for the department, demonstrating good use of grammar and spelling
- Client/case management –
- Initial client contact to include taking initial precognition/witness statement from the client on the legal issues and background to their case.
- Arranging and attending meetings and consultations to include client meetings, consultations with experts, consultations with counsel; preparing full note of meetings/consultations, providing the note to counsel and dealing with any issues arising.
- Court work to include working with Court of Session Rules and Chapter 43 All Scotland Personal Injury Court (ASPIC) Rules and following all procedures to include preparation, lodging and service of writs/summonses; drafting and intimating/enrolling motions for ASPIC and Court of Session; specifications of documents, preparation of inventories of productions, appendices and all electronic papers for proofs in ASPIC and Court of Session
- Guardianship and executry litigation to include preparing summary applications (sheriff court), witness statements, medical reports, all lodging and serving of applications.
- Case management to include preparing case management spreadsheets, managing all court work and deadlines, including deadlines and court procedure compliance for other members of the team
- Preparing fee notes using Aderant system and/or liaison with the firm’s Fee Charging Department relative to production of more complex fee notes
- Other legal/administrative work as required by the team.
What you will need to succeed
- Have a competent knowledge of legal practice
- Demonstrate good knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint
- Possess a good knowledge of document management
- Have fast and accurate typing with good attention to detail
- Be a team worker who can also work using your own initiative
- Be adaptable and flexible in approach, have a positive attitude and work with enthusiasm and commitment to the team.
- While previous Paralegal experience would be beneficial the candidate would be expected to obtain a formal paralegal qualification.
