WHO WE NEED

The Paralegal will be accountable to provide primary legal support for Securian Canada’s corporate governance, including but not limited to engagement with the Board of Directors and preparation of related materials. You will be taking minutes, preparing quarterly materials for the Board of Directors, regulatory and other corporate filings, annual reports and licensing. In addition, you will support the management of Securian Canada’s litigation. You will also be responsible for certain legal operations and project management activities to support the legal department’s efficiency.

What you will do

  • Support a team of lawyers with department operations and projects in a fast-paced environment;
  • Help with the coordination, preparation and required documentation for quarterly Board meetings, related regulatory filings, and providing general support to the Corporate Secretary;
  • Help with drafting meeting agendas, assist in preparation and review of meeting materials, taking meeting minutes, and liaise with all stakeholders to ensure the meeting of applicable deadlines;
  • Coordinate communication with Board members, presenters, and preparation of post-meeting action lists;
  • Provide support with annual filings, licensing, and clerical tasks for Legal department;
  • Support litigation management by liaising with parent company litigation counsel and external counsel, investigate claims and liaise with internal claims and underwriting teams; drafting correspondence and simple court documents;
  • Update related policies, procedures, and template documentation;
  • Help with complaint related matters;
  • Conduct Legal research;
  • Additional duties as required.

What you will bring

The education & the experience.

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree, diploma, or certification;
  • 5+ years of relevant paralegal experience at a law firm or in an insurance (preferred) or in a finance organization;
  • Experience providing support to Boards of Directors;
  • Litigation or claims management experience;

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Highly organized and a strong attention to detail;
  • Business level French is an asset.
