DESCRIPTION

Gaston Social Services: Protecting, caring for and empowering children and adults who are temporarily or permanently unable to care for themselves through the administrating of federal, state and county programs focused on improving the well-being of our citizens.
The goal of the Gaston County Human Services Center and Division of Social Services is to foster an agency which is professionally responsive to our citizens’ needs through daily caring outreach and simultaneously serve as an advocate for those in need. We strive to be community-minded and community-spirited. We abide by federal, state and county operating instructions in providing services and we assist welfare recipients in attaining self-sufficiency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors Degree in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Political Science or a closely related field; or An Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies and 2 years of experience as a paralegal is required.
Must be a current Notary Public or be willing to obtain certification within 6 months of employment.
Must be able to type, construct legal documents, use machines such as computers, scanners, phones. Must have a keen attention to detail and capacity to manage high volume of cases. This position is considered light work; ability to lift 15- 20 pounds in order to carry legal files to court and storage.

Responsibilities:

The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.

  • Drafting legal documents (including orders, motions, affidavits, notices, subpoenas and certificates of service, and TPR’s).
  • Being responsible for all substantive content in legal files and procedural requirements.
  • Performing general office work (organization, filing, legal database, scheduling of conferences, and attorney appointments).
  • Assisting social workers in drafting petitions and gathering information in locating missing parents.
  • Tracking status of cases (service of process, attorney appointments, paternity, timelines, TPR, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned.
