POSITION DESCRIPTION – COMMUNITY GARDENS COORDINATOR

  • This position will require a flexible work schedule with some out of hours work.
  • First Aid Certificate or a willingness to gain one.

Essential criteria

  • Australian residency.
  • Advanced communication skills both written and verbal.
  • A current driver’s licence.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree in environmental sustainability, community development, social/behavioral
    science or relevant applied experience.

SKILLS

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of community development and experience in

human behavior change, community engagement and/or community development.

  • Knowledge of the principles of environmental management and urban sustainability.
  • High level skills and experience in working in the community, including developing,

coordinating, implementing and facilitating events, community forums, workshops and

presentations.

  • Experience working with volunteers and community groups.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, respect and collective action towards sustainability goals.
  • Keen political awareness and ability to navigate complex community dynamics, diverse

perspectives, and strategically engaging stakeholders for positive outcomes.

  • Ability to communicate with a diversity of people, both in writing and verbally, to convey

complex or sensitive matters in a concise, simple and compassionate manner.

  • Skills in providing advice to senior decision makers to establish new initiatives and report

on the progress of projects and services.

  • Ability to negotiate and manage conflict for mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Self-directed, working independently with limited direction.
  • Sound project management skills to establish priorities and meet milestones and

deadlines.

  • Experience in assessing community needs and program development.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects using excellent time management, project

planning and management skills.

PURPOSE

The Community Gardens Coordinator supports the delivery of sustainable living programs in
the City of Marion with a particular focus on coordinating the development, management and
evaluation of council’s approaches to community gardening.
This includes working on new initiatives, supporting existing projects and working with the
community to deliver council’s priorities in sustainable living. A strong emphasis is placed on
using community development principles and working in a partnership approach with the
community, local organisations and government and non-government agencies.
The Community Gardens Coordinator will work across the organisation and with the
community to identify opportunities that will deliver greater value to our communities and the
environment. Strong communication skills and ability to maintain solid relationships (with
internal and external) stakeholders will be vital to this role.
