Description:

Prepare specimens for testing in the Caboolture Laboratory, or aliquot and package specimens for transport to referral laboratories in accordance with Pathology Queensland procedures and maintain appropriate despatch records.

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘your key responsibilities’, the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated experience & knowledge of the procedures and processes of Specimen Reception.
  • Demonstrated experience & knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge in the correct procedures of specimen collection/phlebotomy including the application of established policies and guidelines with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and biological specimens.
  • Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to communicate effectively with clients, clinical staff and colleagues
  • Positive focus upon patient care within a hospital health care environment.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement.
  • Demonstrate data entry skills with the ability to work accurately and give attention to detail

Qualifications, registrations, and other requirements

  • While not Mandatory a relevant qualification such as a Certificate 3 or 4 in Phlebotomy or Laboratory Techniques would be well regarded.
  • This position requires the incumbent to participate in rosters that may include day shifts, evening shifts, weekends, public holidays and overtime as required. It is anticipated that service delivery will be continually optimised so there may be future changes to roster requirements.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
