Description:

EDUCATION & LEARNING

  • Take responsibility for the development and implementation of pre-registration nurse education and training programmes in conjunction with affiliated colleges and universities. Take direct responsibility for the suitability, quality and level of supervision of clinical nursing practice placements.
  • Ensure that appropriate in-service education programmes and ongoing learning needs are met for all assigned staff. Liaise and co-operate with the Nursing, Planning Midwifery and Development Unit and appropriate third-level education institutes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND/ OR EXPERIENCE

At the time of applying, candidates must have:

  • at least 3 years’ experience out of the last 6 years at a management level in a care of the elderly facility;
  • be registered by the NMBI;
  • strong experience of gerontology and Alzheimer nursing;
  • in-depth knowledge of nursing administrative procedures;
  • possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office; and
  • A post registration management qualification in a health or related field
  • management or equivalent.

A qualification in gerontology is desirable, but not essential for this role.

SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND/OR KNOWLEDGE

  • Display a high level of experience and knowledge relevant to the role including knowledge of legislation associated with HIQA and associated governance structures and knowledge of strategies associated with the provision and development of nursing services.
  • Demonstrate understanding and/ or experience of nursing services development.
  • Demonstrate strategic and system thinking including the ability to adapt a corporate overview; sees the bigger picture of service delivery and appreciates the interconnectedness of issues.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish policy, systems and structures. Designs and implements structured policies and systems for the management of service delivery in consultation with key stakeholders and ensures clear role accountability for service levels, quality and decision-making discretion.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain close working relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues ensuring that a partnership approach is adapted to the management of the services.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and team management skills including the ability to work within the Senior Management Team.
  • Displays a developmental approach to staff.
  • Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills including experience in resource management and achieving value for money.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage deadlines and effectively handle multiple tasks.

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF THE POST

The PIC will oversee all aspects of care and activities within the Elmhurst/Desmond and will work with all disciplines and professions across the organisation.
The position requires strong leadership and vision with a strategic and innovative approach to the development of people, services and structures. They will embrace continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives and full compliance with HIQA regulations.

LEADERSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY

  • As part of the Operations team, ensuring that services are delivered within the parameters of modern practice, including service access, quality, evidenced based interventions, resource utilisation, and the provision of a range of choices for service users.
  • Provide strategic and clinical leadership and direction for nursing and related services which results in the delivery of effective, efficient, quality assured, patient centred nursing care.
  • Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation among staff in the management of change, the development of the nursing services and in responding to the changing health needs of patients.Keep the COO, the medical Director and any other relevant persons appraised of any significant development within his/her area of responsibility and perform such additional duties as may be assigned from time to time.
