Description:

BASIC FUNCTION: Plan, organize, direct and provide pharmacy services and the controlled dispensing of medications in accordance with established hospital policies to provide optimal pharmaceutical care for all patients and departments of the facility.
SHIFT DAYS/HOURS: Day shift with some call requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctorate degree in Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy.
Experience: Previous hospital pharmacy experience or residency preferred.
Certificates, License, Registrations:
Licensed by the State of Kansas as a registered pharmacist.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Generalist broad-based pharmacy knowledge. Ability to multi-task. Ability to obtain drug information quickly and to provide education to staff and patients. Attention to detail. Supervision of technician staff required. Advanced computer technology skills including Word and Excel required. Ability to troubleshoot computer and automated dispensing machine problems. Interpersonal skills a necessity with physicians, nurses, patients and other employees of the hospital. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality.
Physical: Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, or negligible constantly. Walking or standing to a significant degree, or sitting constantly and pushing/pulling controls.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive and dispense prescription medications by compounding, packaging and labeling.
  • Provide pharmacy services to patients of all ages. Review and interpret orders for proper indications, correct dosages, therapeutic incompatibilities, possible drug interactions, and required storage and stability.
  • Assesses new and ongoing drug therapy for appropriateness, safety, and production of optimal outcomes for each individual patient and effectively communicate with physicians and other healthcare practitioners.
  • Implement approved therapeutic substitutions; recommend dosage adjustments including renal and hepatic modifications and appropriate therapeutic alternatives, and monitor patient outcomes.
  • Provide consultation and drug information on prescription and non-prescription medications to patients, staff and providers.
  • Compound medications for external and internal use. Prepare sterile solutions following proper procedures.
  • Supervise pharmacy technicians by organizing and directing their work flow, and by verifying their preparations, charges and inspections.
  • Manage patient records and pharmacy files appropriately. Maintain controlled substance records.
  • Maintain appropriate and in-date inventory of pharmaceutical supplies in the pharmacy department as well as other areas in the hospital and clinic where they are stored.
  • Participate in clinical programs (medication monitoring, patient education/teaching, monitoring therapeutic response, etc.). Enhance self- knowledge of drug therapy and therapeutics by actively participating in staff development programs and other education programs such as antibiotic stewardship.
  • Support the mission and values of Amberwell Hiawatha and the Pharmacy Department.
  • Other duties as needed or assigned.
