Description:
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.
For section 3.5 Interface Geochemistry, we are looking for a:
PhD (fmx) in Algal Adaptations and Dynamics in Cryo-Environments
YOUR QUALIFICATIONS:
- MSc in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, or equivalent
- Experience with multiple molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid and protein extractions, DNA/RNA quantification work (PCR/qPCR/qRT-PCR), and protein work (e.g. SDS-PAGE)
- Basic knowledge in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics, in particular related to totalRNA sequencing
- Documented experience in microbial culturing (both eukaryotic and prokaryotic) is a must while experience with stress adaptations, photophysiology, or carbon labelling would be a strong asset
- Basic knowledge in the use of mass spectrometry, in particular for protein quantification is an asset
- Experience with light, fluorescence and electron microscopy techniques would strengthen the application
- Prior experience with fieldwork is a bonus but not required; however, a willingness to undertake fieldwork in polar environments is a must
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
Start date: 1st January 2025
Fixed-term: 3 Jahre
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 (75%) according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Place of work: Potsdam
Responsibilities:
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Focusing on the molecular biology of eukaryotic cryogenic algae, with this PhD project you evaluate cellular traits underpinning the adaptation of snow and glacier ice algae to the oligotrophic and variable light conditions that allows the algae to bloom in the summer. Using algal cultures, you will undertake laboratory experiments to characterise the effect of individual and combined stressors on the gene expression and cellular physiology of the algae. You will employ a plethora of techniques, including totalRNA sequencing/qRT-PCR, photophysiology, fluorescence/electron microscopy and protein quantification. The laboratory work will be complemented by field sampling to investigate algal gene expression in natural Arctic environments.
MAIN TASKS:
- Conduct original research related to cryogenic eukaryotic algal processes
- Design and perform stress response experiments in the laboratory, and participate in field campaigns
- Use multi-technique approaches (including sequencing, microscopy, and photophysiology) to investigate the cellular biology of cryogenic algae
- Publish in international peer reviewed journals
- Present research results at regular group, department, national and international meetings as posters or oral presentation
