Description:

The Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a PhD scholarship in Economics. The PhD scholarship belongs to the research project “Shaping the Corporate Management Culture” funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.
The primary aim of this research project is to analyze how management values and corporate culture influence major trends in the labor market, including wage inequality. Previous research (Acemoglu, He and le Maire, 2022) has found that appointing a CEO with a business education tends to lower worker wages. The present research project focuses on how corporate management philosophy is propagated and influences key firm decisions as well as how CEO incentives can promote certain strategic firm decisions.
As a PhD student on this project, you will work with comprehensive administrative data sets that include information on firms, their management, and workers. Experience with data handling and econometric tools for policy evaluation is therefore beneficial. Additionally, the chosen candidate will be tasked with data collection through web scraping and textual analysis.
The selected candidate will join an international research team consisting of Daniel le Maire (University of Copenhagen), Alex Xi He (University of Maryland), and Daron Acemoglu (MIT). The selected candidate will be collaborating with senior researchers on two research projects, but is also expected to conduct at least one other research project independently, either alone or with junior colleagues. We invite you to include a short outline of a possible independent research project in your application. The outline should state and motivate a research question and discuss data sources and empirical designs that may allow you to address it.
The deadline for applying is June 25, 2024. The expected starting date of the PhD position is September 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. The scholarship can be either 5+3 or 4+4 (see below).
