Description:

OVERVIEW:

The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division (GSHSD) is seeking qualified applicants for a Senior Photogrammetry Research Professional position within our Remote Sensing Group (RSG). RSG is part of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and seeks to hire qualified candidates to support photogrammetry and 3D computer vision research initiatives with emphasis on remote sensing and image analysis. Under the guidance of research staff, the selected applicant(s) will take roles on multidisciplinary teams supporting cutting-edge research and engineering with large-scale distributed geospatial workflows that require GPU-based high-performance computing (HPC) across multiple network domains.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires a Ph.D. with a minimum of 6 years relevant experience or a M.S. with a minimum of 15 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to write winning proposals to government agencies in national security.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead national security projects as principal investigator.
  • Demonstrated ability to make significant technical contributions to projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to present scientific results to sponsors and technical communities, as well as at professional society conferences and workshops.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to a team environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated track record of research and development leadership in national and/or international engagements that seek to sustain and strengthen the national security community.
  • Experience working for or collaborating with DOE National Laboratories (or similar R&D organizations).
  • Experience with geographical information systems (GIS).
  • Experience with stereo imagery, LIDAR, and other 3D sensing capabilities.
  • Proficient in a Linux OS environment.
  • Familiarity with the basics of machine learning and high-performance computing (HPC).
  • Experience with the following languages: C/C++, Python, R, C#, Java.
  • Experience with the following software: Socet GXP, ENVI, or Pix4D.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Highly motivated to learn new topics and skills and develop innovative products.

Responsibilities:

RSG is seeking a senior researcher who will focus on the design and implementation of photogrammetry and 3D computer vision algorithms to support high-volume and high-throughput scientific data applications, primarily with remote sensing sensors. The proposed solutions will include GPU-based HPC solutions that can be applicable for several geospatially focused research and development projects in energy, transportation, national security, and other cross-disciplinary geospatial domains. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Think innovatively about photogrammetric and 3D computer vision algorithms to support geospatial workflows in high-performance computing environments.
  • Implement and develop prototype software to demonstrate feasibility of algorithms and then work with engineers to accelerate software in HPC environments.
  • Initiate, lead, and perform independent and impactful research and development for innovative science and technology delivered to sponsors, successful proposals, presentations.
  • Collaborate in a team environment with multi-disciplinary technical staff, including mentoring students and early-career staff.
  • Communicate to broader technical community through scholarly products such as patents, papers, proposals, presentations, and reports.
