Description:

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Lead Physician and the direction of the Director of the Student Health Center, the Physician performs medical diagnostic and treatment and preventative health care and education to students in an ambulatory care setting. The Physician works collaboratively with all the Student Health Center staff and actively participates in health education activities, training of health-related staff, and development of policies, protocols and procedures. Additional duties include participation in Student Health Center and campus wide committees when assigned. Responsible for all actions taken as a licensed California physician as outlined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from a medical school and completion of a residency training program in a primary care field such as family medicine, general internal medicine, gynecology, general pediatrics, emergency medicine, preventive medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent.
  • Physicians in this classification must possess and maintain:
  • A valid State of California license to practice medicine.
  • Current American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) board certification appropriate for the assigned duties. See note below.
  • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.
    Note. In accordance with Executive Order 943, a physician can be given clinical privileges pending initial certification, but must be board certified as soon as possible, but no later than two years after the date of hire.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of and the ability to effectively and efficiently apply the principles and methods essential to the diagnosis and treatment of common primary care medical disorders, and in the assessment and response to acute medical situations.
  • Understanding of community resources for referral of medical care and treatment beyond the scope of the Student Health Center.
  • knowledge of current public health practices; knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable professional ethics standards and patient privacy; ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center personnel.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners and specialists, as well as students, administrators, staff, and faculty.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with college students, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts complete physical examinations
  • Diagnoses medical problems, prescribes treatment and counsels patients.
  • Refers patients to outside agencies; consults with private and public agencies in securing treatment for students requiring services beyond the scope of those available in the Student Health Center.
  • Orders and interprets x-rays and laboratory tests electronically.
  • Interpretation of patient’s medical history, physical exam, and diagnostic tests and recognition between normal, normal variance and abnormal findings.
  • Follows up of all abnormal findings either by intervention, counseling or referral on or off campus.
  • Per California State University Executive Order 943, provides first aid as needed.
  • Advises students on health education and preventive care.
  • Records and completes case histories and reports on electronic medical record.
  • Performs minor surgery not including general anesthesia.
  • Provides emergency medical care to anyone needing such care on campus.
  • Provides diagnosis, treatment and preventative counseling and education regarding reproductive health needs, including but not limited to Sexually Transmitted Infections, contraception and pregnancy.
  • Provides medication abortion service and consultation.
  • Prepares and presents articles, lectures and workshops on health -related topics to campus groups. Serves on internal and campus committees as appropriate and assigned. Acts as campus and community outreach liaison.
  • Provides consultation as necessary for all medical providers, including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.
  • Participates in the conception, development, assessment and implementation of quality assurance projects; participates in staff conferences.
  • Engages in professional development and required continuing education activities; maintains license and current board certification.
  • Performs other classification-related duties as assigned.
