Description:
The University invites applications for the above post which is available immediately and tenable for 33 months from commencement, with the opportunity of ongoing permanent employment with the industrial partner.
The ideal candidate is expected to have a PhD or equivalent international qualification or commensurate level of recognition/ international profile/industrial experience in a relevant numerate discipline such as Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, etc., preferable with focus on numerical modelling of hydrodynamics systems.
This is a project in partnership between The University of Manchester, The Port of Dover and the University of Plymouth. The vision of the project is to create a state-of-the-art marine digital twin of the Port of Dover, equipped to create innovative AI-enabled solutions and assessments, enabling the Port of Dover to become a tech-enabled sustainable organisation that can extend safe navigation throughout the port.
The successful candidate will be based at the Port of Dover (Harbour House, Marine Parade, Dover CT17 9BU), and will also join the vibrant research environment of both the Management Science Group and the Decision and Cognitive Sciences Research Centre at the Alliance Manchester Business School and Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Division with the School of Engineering at the University of Manchester. The University of Manchester is also a partner of the Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in activities with the Institute.
The University of Plymouth, School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics are collaborating with Manchester to deliver this KTP project and will co-supervise the Associate. The Associate will benefit from access to the Maritime Simulation Laboratory a world-leading facility for research and development in the marine field at the University of Plymouth.
The Port of Dover is the busiest international ferry port in the UK, with two million cars and 11 million passengers passing through the Port every year. Dover is in the Southeast of the country in the region of Kent and is easily commutable from Folkestone, Deal, Ramsgate and Canterbury.
