Description:

Communication To use basic communication skills to encourage patients to undertake their treatment programme, including patients with communication and understanding difficulties, e.g. dysphasia, dementia, learning difficulties, visual and hearing impairments, non English speaking patients and seek guidance from the Physiotherapists and wider team when necessary. To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure relevant information regarding patients status is reported back to the team. To provide instruction to patients in a group setting, including exercise, communication and cognitive therapy groups.
To attend multi-disciplinary ward meetings case conferences and goal setting meetings, as directed by senior physiotherapy staff. To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date patient-related documentation in line with legal and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy requirements. To gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work, with the guidance of a Physiotherapist, within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment. Service Delivery and Improvement Ensure ward stock of physio equipment is maintained at the designated level.
Photocopying, filing and faxing, as requested Retrieve, as requested, patient notes and X-rays from medical records. Provide administrative support to the team, i.e. starting any outpatient or community physiotherapy referrals and sending to appropriate service once approved and completed by the physiotherapist. Maintain updated and accurate daily records of patients treatment in line with the departments documentation policy.
Maintain and collate activity statistics Assist, as requested, with typing patient related information. To be competent in basic word and excel skills and Physio Tech. Become familiar and use Trust IT systems Assist in the provision of a seamless service To participate in service improvement projects. People Management and Development Maintain professionalism in public/ ward areas.
Maintain patient confidentiality and dignity at all times. Adhere to Trust and departmental policies and procedures, inc. The Health and Safety at Work Act. Participate in the departments annual appraisal scheme.
Attend and participate in departmental/ specialty in-service training as directed by senior or superintendent staff. Patient Care Delivery To be responsible and accountable for all aspects of your delegated work. To maintain high standards of clinical care for the patients as defined by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, University Hospitals Sussex and the Physiotherapy Department. To take ward handover as directed by senior staff.
No clinical decisions regarding appropriateness for treatment should be made and all information regarding the patient status reported back for triage by the physiotherapist. To assist the physiotherapist in moving, handling and treatment programmes. To undertake standard treatment programmes on a delegated caseload of patients who have been previously assessed by a physiotherapist and progress within a protocol set by the physiotherapists. To be able to facilitate and analyse basic movement patterns, and feedback to the physiotherapist regarding changes in patients movement patterns and alignment.
To report progress and variances in treatment to the appropriate physiotherapist / discipline at the earliest possible opportunity To organise the delegated caseload effectively and efficiently on a day to day basis with guidance from the physiotherapist when needed. To demonstrate dexterity and co-ordination for carrying out treatment, such as massage, facilitation of movement and passive stretches. To be competent in the use of therapy equipment (e.g. tilt table, standing frame) as directed by the physiotherapist.
To recognise any adverse reactions in the patient during treatment and act accordingly. To assist the physiotherapist in the application of discharge plans. Decisions regarding the discharge of patients from physiotherapy must be made in discussion with the physiotherapist. To undertake basic mobility assessments of patients previously seen by a physiotherapist according to departmental protocols.
To undertake stair assessment with patients previously assessed by a Physiotherapist according to departmental protocols. Instruct patients in the use of walking aids and provide advice to patients and carers regarding safety issues associated with walking aids, according to departmental policy. To be responsible for the equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties, and to adhere to departmental equipment policy and Care Quality Commission Standard. To ensure the safe use of equipment and reporting of faults by self and others including patients, carers and other health professionals.
To be an active member of the week end and bank holiday service. To work a 7 day rostered system when in place. To undertake other duties as may be deemed necessary by the senior Physiotherapists. Learning and Development Attend mandatory training updates as required.
Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process. Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales. Identify own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with your line manager Participate in the Trusts appraisal process to discuss how your role will help deliver the best possible care to our patients and help to deliver any changes in service.
