QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in Civil Engineering or related field or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in the planning, design, drafting and constructing of rapid transit, urban roadways/streets, active transportation, highways, transit, water/storm/sanitary infrastructure, utilities, or environmental assessments for linear transportation facilities.
  • Experience with undertaking stakeholder and public consultation activities and study documentation, as required.
  • Proven experience in dealing with budgets and schedules and dealing with technical and financial data to find solutions to complex issues and challenges.
  • Knowledge of fundamental aspects of road/rapid transit design, surveying, and survey applications.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation and standards.
  • Knowledge of transportation/transit planning, traffic engineering and road design and construction fundamentals, as well as guidelines and standards.
  • Knowledge of the planning, design, operations, and maintenance of transit facilities such as rapidway stations, bus terminals, and on street bus stops
  • Demonstrated ability in the Region’s core competencies.
  • Advanced MS Office Suite skills and the use of virtual platform. As well as demonstrated experience with the application of specialized software relevant to the technical specialty.

Responsibilities:

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for oversight of Regional interests for special projects delivered by the Region or other agencies, including the Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE), subway, light rail transit and bus rapid transit projects through coordinating and assisting with the statutory processes, planning, preliminary design, consultant studies and analysis, specialist investigations and impact assessments. Also responsible for assisting with the review of contract drawings, tender documents, specifications and estimates.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews transportation/transit studies for rapid transit projects and provides comments, background information, data, and analysis.
  • Reviews and provides input on planning, design, operations, and maintenance related studies and documents for the construction of transit facilities such as rapidway stations, bus terminals, and on street bus stops
  • Participates in meetings, committees, work groups, task forces
  • Liaises with consultants, contractors, public, Regional staff, outside agencies and other partners.
  • Assists in leading and coordinating review of environmental assessment studies including preparation of the needs and justification, public consultation, transportation analysis, assessment of alternatives, compliance monitoring, and preparation and review of documentation as required.
  • Assists with reviewing, drawings and contract documents.
  • Reviews and provides comments on preliminary and detailed designs, tenders, specifications, and documents prepared by external partners and prepares cost sharing estimates.
  • Prepares, reviews, and evaluates preliminary design alternatives and recommends options.
  • Prepares and reviews design cross-sections from survey data.
  • Strong report writing, research, analytical and presentation skills and work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and with teams and with ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to organize data in a structured, traceable and proficient manner.
  • Prepares and reviews plans, sketches, posters, graphs and maps for presentations.
  • Reviews and provides comments on engineering plans for development and utility approval.
  • Carries out site inspections to ensure accuracy of base plans and for special detail design situations.
  • Coordinates activities of several ongoing projects under the direction of the management.
  • Coordinates branch responses to project specific Requests for Information (RFI)
  • Ensures that services provided meet Regional customer service standards.
  • Manages information in accordance with legislation and corporate standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.
