Description:

ABOUT US

North Shore Emergency Management (NSEM), a tri-municipal agency providing emergency management services to the District of North Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, and the District of West Vancouver. We are seeking a Planning Assistant II to join the team for a 3-month temporary opportunity. This position is funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (see eligibility criteria below).

POSITION OVERVIEW

The North Shore is susceptible to a wide range of hazards and risks including earthquakes, wildfires, landslides, flooding, sea level rise, and extreme weather events. In November 2023, the Emergency and Disaster Management Act came into force in B.C. The new legislation requires consideration of climate change in emergency management, an evaluation of disproportionate impacts, and respectful inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge and local knowledge (e.g. lived experience). NSEM has partnered with Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Squamish Nation and the three North Shore municipalities to develop a strategy to build community resilience to multiple hazards which are expected to become worse due to climate change. This project will help establish the baseline for resilience planning on the North Shore.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS). Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a fulltime undergraduate or graduate program at UVic, UBC, SFU, or UNBC, and must either be returning to complete their degree programs following the internship or have completed their programs the semester prior to the start of the internship.

APPLY

The District of North Vancouver is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive, and accessible work environment. If you have what we’re looking for and have a passion to serve people and the community, a demonstrated understanding of safety, a commitment to supporting a healthy and safe workplace, and a willingness to take further safety training as required, we would like to hear from you. Please apply by April 12, 2024, to be considered.
If you require accommodation to participate in the recruitment process, please inform us when we contact you.
We thank you for your interest in employment with the District of North Vancouver and advise that only those shortlisted for an interview will be contacted.
We respectfully acknowledge the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), on whose ancestral lands the District of North Vancouver is located.
