Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Building Services Coordinator, the Plans Examiner – Building Inspector Intern reviews and approves plans submitted for Part 9 building permit applications, this includes residential and small buildings. The role is a position of skilled technical work with focus on permit reviews. This is a developmental opportunity that will grow top talent while delivering important public services with the intention of the incumbent becoming a registered Building Inspector for the City of Kenora. As such, the successful candidate will need to be prepared to take the provincial qualifying exams, as listed below, to become a qualified building official within three years from the date-of-hire.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post Secondary Education in architectural technology/technician, engineering technology/technician or an interprovincial Trades certification in a construction trade. A relevant combination of experience and /or education will also be considered.
  • Must be willing to complete the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing examinations listed below within three years of hire (Preference will be given to candidates who have completed any of the examinations at the time of application):


    • General Legal

    • House
    • Small Buildings
    • Plumbing – House
    • HVAC – House
    • This is a developmental opportunity. As such, the candidate must have a willingness to complete the following Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing examinations:


      • Large Buildings

      • Complex Buildings
      • Plumbing-All Buildings
      • Building Services
      • Building Structural
      • One (1) to three (3) years recent responsible experience in the construction industry or municipal government directly engaged in the building permit process, experience reading and interpreting plans, specifications and data sheets pertaining to architectural and structural design for compliance with the OBC.
      • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
      • Building permit software experience would be considered an asset.
      • Exceptional customer service skills, and experience dealing with the public.
      • Able to remain calm under duress and maintain professional composure when subject to significant opposition from customers.
      • Able to exhibit considerable patience and understanding in dealing with applicants unfamiliar with building and development processes.
      • Able to read and understand all construction drawings related to Part 9 Buildings.
      • Demonstrates good judgment and makes sound decisions.
      • Proven written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with honesty, openness, respect, and trust.
      • Must possess a valid ‘G’ class Ontario Driver’s License. Ability and willingness to travel within the community and out of town as required.
      • Availability to work flexible hours including overtime as required.
      • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
