Our client is seeking to engage a Policy Advisor Medical Practice.
Location: Canberra, ACT
Contract Length: Permanent, Full time, Start - ASAP

Responsibilities:

The Policy Adviser works under the direction of the Policy Manager – Medical Practice. Broadly, the Policy Adviser will provide policy advice and undertake a range of tasks in respect of the issues concerning but not limited to health technology assessment policy and regulation, and private health, MBS Review, and the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Undertake timely research and analysis of medical practice issues.
  • Support the drafting of Agency’s policy and position statements, submissions, background papers, briefing papers and reports for Agency’s Committees, Federal Council as required, and contribute material for publications, as well as media releases and speeches and web-based information.
  • Support the provision of policy advice to the President and Federal Councilors’ for meetings with parliamentarians, senior officials, and public figures, and in response to media inquiries.
  • Respond to verbal enquiries regarding current issues and Agency’s policies.
  • Jointly with the Policy Manager – Medical Practice, represent the Agency as required at workshops, seminars, conferences, and other external meetings.
  • Provide secretariat support and policy leadership to one or more Agency committees, including the Medical Practice Committee. This will involve scheduling meetings, setting agendas, managing member attendance, preparing meeting papers and minutes and undertaking follow up action.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the success of the team in meeting the Agency’s aims and objectives and to undertake other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of this role.
  • Undertake other projects, outside the roles and responsibilities outlined above, as requested by the Policy Manager – Medical Practice.

Selection Criteria:

  • Experience working as a Policy Adviser or working in a similar type of role.
  • Demonstrated research skills, including collection and analysis of quantitative data, as well as the ability to contribute to policy development and undertake projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify relevant issues and to collate and present information to substantiate policy advice.
  • Demonstrated communication skills and ability to provide succinct and accurate briefings on media issues within limited timeframes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, using initiative to solve problems and produce high quality accurate work with a minimum of supervision and under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively and build collaborative working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Experience in using modern computer software (e.g., MS Office 365 / TRIM) and office systems to analyze data, produce documents dealing with complex issues, and maintain accurate records.
  • Relevant qualifications or a combination of qualifications in either a Health discipline, Politics, or Social Sciences will be well regarded.
  • The duties and responsibilities of the position require the flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, which may occasionally include evenings and weekends, and may require travel interstate; this is reflected in the salary.
