You will work closely with your counter-part at Royal Preston Hospital. Providing an effective, patient focused Portering Service, including but not limited to: provision of appropriate Portering services, co-ordination of service Health and Safety issues, delivering a cost effective, efficient and high standard of patient transfer and Portering support across the Trust footprint.

You will have responsibility for ensuring staffing levels are met to facilitate patient flow and to ensure these levels do not exceed the budget for the department. You will have operational management of the main portering pool, dealing with all patient and non-patient transfers as well as postal services, bed management and all ad-hoc requests.
You will ensure the HR responsibilities are carried out and will monitor compliance across their own remit, reporting issues to the Trust Portering and Support Services Manager. This includes facilitating access to training for all substantive and bank staff as well as absence management and any associated meetings and reports.
You will be responsible for implementing agreed and new policies, procedures, and practices applicable to their own work area. Working collaboratively with IPC team and wider clinical stakeholders.

You will need to communicate effectively at different levels of the organisation in both verbal and written form.

Managerial Responsibility
Effectively support the leadership team in the day to day running of the Portering department, including leading and managing the team.
The role will require the post holder to exercise judgement when dealing with enquiries, to analyse or investigate the situation and propose possible solutions.
The post holder will have the ability to plan and organise activities, which may include multi-disciplinary meetings including but not limited to HR, finance, staffing, procurement, service contract review etc. The role also provides the opportunity to undertake project work.
Accept day to day responsibility for the quality of provision within own areas.
Liaise with patients, clinical and wider stakeholders to ensure the delivery of a patient focused service delivering the highest levels of assurance.
The post holder is required to work within clearly defined Trust policies and has the discretion to work using their own initiative, seeking guidance from their line manager as appropriate.
The post holder will need to prioritise their own work and sometimes that of others, resolving conflicting diary/appointments and schedules.
Human Resource and Workforce

Day to day management responsibility for the Portering Team, which requires dealing with:

  • Recruitment and selection.
  • Training and development.
  • Local induction lead
  • Appraisals.
  • Probation.
  • Allocation of work
  • First level disciplinary, capability and grievance matters.

Maintenance of appropriate HR and personal files and records.
Finance and Resource
Authorised signatory for small payments up to £2,000 per month.
Manage the delivery of services within an agreed budget.
Develop action plans for bringing overspends back into line and look for cost saving opportunities.
Learning & Development
Influence the development and provision of training in relation to relevant services.
Maintain knowledge of the latest NHS polices and specific guidance.
Undertake continuous personal development through a recognised CPD process seeking opportunities to enhance skills that will support a personal development plan.
Service Development & IT
Development of procedures for own work area.
Regularly carry out audits, working with appropriate clinical and other leads, to meet Trust quality standards.
The post holder will be expected to participate in audits and information gathering to inform service development.
Implement and monitor working procedures and record keeping assuring governance in accordance with national and Trust guidelines.
Ensure appropriate waste management, following Trust guidelines.
Report adverse incidents and follow other health and safety procedures within own area of responsibilities, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
Review policies/pathways for Portering team and determine follow up and changes within own area.
Ensure maintenance of team competency (mandatory training etc.) and maintain appropriate records.
The role requires the post holder to process information and correspondence.
To utilise information technology skills to develop databases or spreadsheets as appropriate to the work of the team.
Utilise the Trusts systems for the reporting and management of reactive maintenance requirements, risk assessments, incidents, and training
