Description:
Required Qualifications:
- Must have PhD in medicinal chemistry with a strong emphasis in structural biology.
- Demonstrated experience working with international collaborators on crystallization of small
molecule compound complex with proteins and the solution of these structures using
computational methods.
- Knowledge of the processes for uploading data to the PBD (protein databank).
- Knowledge typically acquired by structural biology work in a rigorous academic setting.
- Detailed knowledge of the methods structural biology including plasmid design, protein
production and purification, and methods of protein-complex crystallization.
- Strong scientific writing skills.
- Superior record keeping and documentation skills.
- Excellent communication (both spoken and written) skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and complete complex projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge of chemical safety and chemical hygiene strategies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of typical software packages such as (but not limited to) Microsoft Office, ChemDraw, Graphpad Prism and software typically used by structural biologists in the solution of crystal structure data.
- Ability to work completely independently.
- Strong collaborative skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the design and expression of mutant proteins suitable for crystallization.
Provide structural biology support to ensure that translational medicinal chemistry projects in the Institute of Therapeutics Discovery and Development are advanced to milestones in an effective manner.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Laboratory-based Medicinal Chemistry (80%):
- Designs, plans, implements, and evaluates complex, multifaceted research projects in
structural biology while remaining current on technological and scientific developments in
the field and their potential application into experimental plans.
- Works with supervisor for experimental planning and executes scientific experiments to
sustain data generation and evaluation.
- Evaluates, suggest alternate methods, modify, or develop new procedures and techniques
to aid in the investigation of structural biology research problems or programs in the
supervisor’s laboratory.
- Modifies protein expression to maintain efficiency and quality, searches for better ways to
effectively achieve end results by, for example, scheduling work steps, arranging/ rearranging the way work is generally performed, and adding or deleting elements of
processes as necessary.
- Discusses and plans new avenues of research with supervisor. Will work under the general
supervision of her supervisor but has the discretion to make daily operational decisions and
work independently.
- Documents work appropriately in electronic laboratory notebooks. Ensures that structural
biology data prepared in the laboratory conform to the quality required for publication.
Writing and Editing: (15% of time):
- Assists with the preparation of scientific manuscripts and works with journal
editors/reviewers to insure effective publication.
- Assists in the drafting reports to communicate her work to the project team and to our
funding sources.
Safety: (5% of time):
- Adheres to best practices of safety and chemical hygiene as mandated by the Department of
Neurology and the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Minnesota.
