Description:

SUMMARY

The Laboratory Animal Medicine Training Program within the Center for Comparative Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking graduate veterinary applicants for a postdoctoral training position. The postdoctoral fellow will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary veterinary team to provide care for a diverse population of research animals and undertake a research project while acquiring the didactic training hours required to sit for certification in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. The incumbent will also work closely with IACUC administrators to help provide regulatory oversight of the animal care and use program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctor of veterinary medicine, licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.
  • Eligible to obtain veterinary license in Texas.
  • Ability to take rotating on call schedule for emergency and after hours clinical coverage.

Responsibilities:

Clinical responsibilities:

  • Conducts assessment and treatment plan for protocol related and spontaneous diseases in rodent and non-rodent species at various animal facilities on a rotating basis as assigned.
  • Completes surgical training of investigators, anesthesia monitoring, and post-op care.
  • Conducts preventative care and health surveillance.
  • Trains at off site primate clinical rotations at Charles River and Bastrop primate facilities.

Research and training responsibilities

  • Identifies a research lab and spends one year performing an independent research project that will result in a first author publication.
  • Assists with and performs other research projects as time permits.
  • Participates and gives lectures in weekly resident seminar series on ACLAM boards material Regulatory responsibilities:
  • Serves on the IACUC as an alternate member.
  • Performs IACUC protocol reviews, IACUC facility and lab inspections, and semiannual program evaluations.
  • Participates in AAALAC site visits an other regulatory inspections as they occur.
