Appointments are limited-term and are designed for those who have recently received a doctorate. Appointments are made to academic departments with the approval of the department head and may require senior officer approval. Appointments are usually for not less than one term and are normally not renewed beyond a total of five years. This appointment is not intended for long-term, indefinite, or career appointments.

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

The Department of Environmental & Occupational Health seeks a Postdoctoral Associate to join the research group of Dr. Kelvin Fong. The group focuses on environmental health disparities research, including exposure assessment and epidemiology to understand the role of environmental conditions in health inequities.
The successful candidate will possess excellent critical thinking, teamwork, and quantitative skills. Working with Dr. Fong and collaborating researchers, the candidate will design and conduct studies to determine the extent to which environmental conditions differentially affect population health depending on social-demographic factors. Prior experience in leading analyses and writing scientific manuscripts is essential. A desire to or record of conducting community-engaged research is considered an advantage. The successful candidate will be mentored and supported to develop proposals for external funding and to present their work at conferences.
In joining the Department, there will be opportunities to work on ongoing projects, including understanding the role of environmental factors in health disparities in marginalized population groups and assessing spatiotemporal differences in impactful environmental health determinants, including but not limited to air pollution, climate change, extreme weather, and access to green spaces.
This full-time position starts in Summer/Fall 2024 for one year and can be extended for additional years depending on performance and funding. By the start of the appointment, the candidate will have received their research doctorate (Ph.D., Sc.D., or equivalent). This is a training position intended to prepare the candidate for their next career stage.

Salary: $65,000 – $70,000 annually plus benefits

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Ph.D., Sc.D., or equivalent by the start date
  • Excellent critical thinking, numerical, and communication skills
  • High attention to detail and accountability
  • Familiarity with a programming language (e.g., R, Python)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and a self-starter

Responsibilities:

  • Designing and conducting research in environmental health and epidemiology
  • Analyzing and interpreting data
  • Writing and presenting results, including producing effective figures, graphs, and tables for research dissemination
  • Preparing grant proposals and developing skills for leading projects
  • Supporting (inter-)national collaborative research, including working with students, peers, and other investigators
