  • A PhD in a relevant discipline and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in a variety of spectroscopic techniques: e.g. Mass and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.
  • Knowledge of Light Scattering methods as well as Liquid Chromatography separation techniques. FAAB samples include (sugars, polysaccharides, lipids, proteins and bioactive peptides, DNAs, fibres, metabolites).
  • Ability to maintain and perform minor repairs and benchmarking of instrumentation.
  • A strong research track record evidenced by first-authored publications in high-quality conference and journal publications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, staff and key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to design experiments and drive a project independently while delivering high-quality results within a deadline.
  • Experience supervising and/or providing mentorship to higher degree research students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with researchers of different disciplinary backgrounds

Responsibilities:

We are seeking a proactive and skilled researcher with experience in spectroscopy, light scattering, and chromatography to work at Macquarie University as part of the Industrial Transformation training Centre in Facilitated Advancement of Australia’s Bioactives (FAAB). The Centre of FAAB is within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde.
About Us
This position supports the research and training activities of FAAB which is led by Associate Professor Alf Garcia-Bennett , Professor Alison Rodger, and Professor Anwar Sunna. The Centre is composed of a multidisciplinary team from the Australian bioactives industry with academia partners from Macquarie University, Deakin University, the University of South Australia and Western Sydney University as well as overseas collaborators.
FAAB characterises a wide range of products containing bioactive molecules to determine modes of action for bioactive products made from foods, food-waste and cell-based biotechnologies with potential lifestyle and nutritional benefits. The successful appointee will be a technique expert and will have the exciting opportunity to work across a number of the centre research areas collaborating with academic staff, industry partners and higher degree by research students. The aim of FAAB is to enable evidence-informed decision-making, and regulatory framework development for the complexities of bioactive products.
The Role
The successful candidate will support FAAB activities through technical training and supervision in your area of expertise. You will actively contribute to the ITTC’s program through research, preparation of project reports and publications, and participate in training programmes designed for researchers at the academic/industry interface. The role will have a nominated primary research supervisor who has relevant expertise from the University as well as a nominated Mentor from within a relevant Industrial Partner who will provide guidance and business context for transformation of research into products.

Salary package: Level A Step 6 (PhD) from $102,501 to $109,852 per annum, plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.
Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed term up to 2 years with a possibility of further extension subject to funding.
