DESCRIPTION

The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. The successful fellow will be conduction research in cellular models of disease, animal models of disease and correlated these results with human biospecimens from patients suffering from lymphatic disorders.
Reporting to the Principal Investigators (PI), Dr. Spencer Gibson, Professor, the Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to ongoing research studies focused on novel mechanisms of lymphatic disorders.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in oncology, biochemistry, immunology or a related field completed within the past 5 years
  • Experience working in a research laboratory environment
  • Extensive experience with cell culture and/or animal models
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cell biology
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Apps (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs), and statistical software (SPSS, STATA)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal
  • Highly developed organizational and time management skills including demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent projects with competing deadlines
    This position is full-time at 40 hours per week. The salary range begins at $40,000 CAD per annum depending on experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the PIs to plan and execute experiments
  • Perform projects related to studying the lymphedema and/or leukemia using mouse models and human cells ex vivo
  • Perform techniques cell culture, assays of enzymes and signaling molecules, flow cytometry, Western, PCR, IP, confocal and fluorescence microscopy, in vivo PET imaging
  • Summarize results and disseminate results
  • Day to day laboratory maintenance duties including managing safety guidelines
  • Supervise undergraduate students
