Responsibilities:

The aim of this MRC-funded postdoctoral fellowship will be the improvement of existing methods for pandemic-scale phylogenetic analysis, including devising and implementing more efficient algorithms and more realistic models of genome evolution. We recently published our new, fast methods permitting phylogenetic analysis of huge data sets (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41588-023-01368-0) and you will take a leading role in our plans to extend these methods further, for still-faster and more accurate analysis of larger data sets. For example, we will develop more realistic models of genome evolution, encompassing rate heterogeneity and sequence errors.
Furthermore, in this project you will create a C++ software library to facilitate the uptake of our techniques within leading existing maximum likelihood-based phylogenetics software packages. You will also integrate our new methods within the phylogenetic package BEAST to allow pandemic-scale Bayesian phylogenetic, phylogeographic and phylodynamic analyses.
