Description:
This position works under occasional supervision. Assignments are at the specialized scientific research level, requiring limited judgment. Trains graduate students in developing their research projects. The research that the postdoctoral fellow will be involved in focuses on the molecular mechanisms in the development of kidney disease in African Americans in the setting of hypoxia. Experiments will utilize cell culture and human patient samples.
Daily Operations
- Plans, designs, and performs research and assists with other research projects
- Record, compile, process, analyze, and report data to the principal investigator
- Write, review, and edit various materials for publication in scientific journals
- Disseminate research findings in scientific platforms such as conferences and workshops
- Present work-in-progress to the scientific community of the institute
- Help, work in a team, and train co-workers in various experiments and scientific writing
- Maintain the inventory of lab reagents, set and operate various lab equipment
- Ensure conduct of research work as per NIH-Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines
- Work to generate and capitalize on new research ideas by applying for funding opportunities
- Assist supervisor in writing research grant proposals
Required Skills
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of biomedical research laboratory operating policies, procedures, and scientific methodology, including the ability to operate and maintain research tools, instruments, and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the use and preparation of culture media, chemicals, and reagents, and the ability to perform various laboratory procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing, including the ability to analyze and extract data from conversations and documents for research projects.
- Ability to conduct research following established department guidelines.
- Strong leading skills and ability to effectively train personnel on laboratory research methods and procedures.
- Strong interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
- Ability to operate PC software and other office technology.
Required Education and Experience
- Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, virology, or a related field.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience with cell culture techniques and expertise in molecular biology techniques, including isolation and analysis of nucleic acids and proteins, gene cloning, mutagenesis, immunoprecipitation, western blotting, and qPCR, are required.
