Responsibilities:

An exciting opportunity for a researcher exists in the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University. We are seeking a qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a team with an international reputation for producing high quality research outcomes in biomedical synthetic biology. We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our synthetic biology project developing new biological drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease.
The successful candidate will work on engineering new biologics in yeast and plants to develop novel therapeutic approaches for Alzheimer’s disease that will be assessed in pre-clinical culture human neurons and genetic mouse models. The successful candidate will have a proactive role and freedom to shape the project’s overall direction. This position is funded by an Ideas Grant from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Reporting to Dr Briardo Llorente, you will:

  • Contribute to the research and development of novel therapeutic approaches for Alzheimer’s disease
  • Conduct experimental work, data analysis and interpretation of results;
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., collaborators);
  • Mentor masters and/or PhD students;
  • Communicate research findings in scientific journals and at conferences

You will have completed a PhD in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, biology, or a closely related discipline. You will enjoy bringing impactful research outcomes and working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team. Your collaborative approach to working with others will ensure you perform effectively within a multi-disciplinary environment. Our state-of-the-art laboratory at the
ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology
is co-located with the
Australian Genome Foundry
at
Macquarie University
in North Ryde, Sydney, Australia, and is equipped with cutting-edge robotic platforms and highly qualified staff. Macquarie University also has a modern and highly sophisticated plant growth facility with controlled environments, including a PC2 glasshouse certified for work with genetically modified plants.

Selection Criteria
To be considered for this position, applicants must address the selection criteria below, and attach your CV, a statement of research interests and achievements.

Essential

  • PhD in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, biology or a related field.
  • Experience in plant synthetic biology, genetic engineering, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
  • Ability to lead research and work collaboratively as part of a research group and with collaborators.
  • Ability to foster a nurturing environment for research students including the provision of research student supervision.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability for analytical thinking and independent problem solving.

Desirable

  • Relevant plant synthetic biology publications.

Salary package: Level A, from $102,501 (Step 6) to $109,852 (Step 8) p.a., plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.
