Job description:
The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) researches new active ingredients against infectious diseases. It was founded in August 2009 as a branch of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig together with Saarland University. A new research building was moved into on the campus of Saarland University in 2015. Currently, 260 employees of international origin work at the institute, which is still under construction. The HIPS is the first publicly funded non-university research institution in Germany explicitly dedicated to pharmaceutical research. The institute cooperates with international and national research institutions and industrial companies.
The research group Drug Bioinformatics group cutting-edge bioinformatics and computer science techniques for predicting mode-of-action of bioactive compounds and effects of genetic variants on the phenotype. We combine the expertise in protein structure analysis and machine learning to create more powerful and explainable computational methods.
The BMBF-funded project “AI-based methods for synergistic exploration of disease symptoms and drug side effects” aims at discovering mechanisms of drug side effects by leveraging systems biology, structural bioinformatics, and machine learning and artificial intelligence. This is a joint project between HZI/HIPS, University of Hamburg, and German Electron Synchrotron (DESY).
This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organisation.
