About the team
Metro’s Infrastructure team maintains our railway, from structures, signals, electrical assets, facilities and more, our team work 24/7 to maintain our network and ensure a safe, reliable and sustainable our passengers. To keep this momentum going, we are seeking a Principal Contract Interface Manager in our Infrastructure division for leading a team of four to set up managing the operational and commercial interfaces with CYP (Cross Yarra Partnership) for MTP (Metro Tunnel Project). This includes direct liaison with DTP (Department of Transport and Planning) to address project-related operational impacts.
This is a full time max-term contract for 17 months based in Docklands, Melbourne.
About the role
The role demands effective cross-departmental coordination within MTM (Metro Trains Melbourne) to set up the interface management, especially with the Infrastructure, Operations, Finance, and Commercial teams, to uphold and advocate for MTM’s contractual commitments.
Additionally, this position plays a key role in collaborating with the Finance and Commercial departments on claims management related to CYP, ensuring the protection and advancement of MTM’s interests.

Main duties include

  • Direct all interactions with key external stakeholders such as the CYP and the DTP, safeguarding MTM’s interests with MTP.
  • Lead the development of the team’s strategy and operating structure.
  • Lead communication and reporting on project-related operational and commercial aspects, ensuring alignment with stakeholder expectations and project transparency.
  • Lead and manage a team of four, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment. Responsible for the professional development, performance management, and mentorship of team members to ensure they are effectively contributing to MTP’s objectives and MTM’s broader goals.
  • Facilitate coordination across MTM’s departments, including Infrastructure, Operations, Finance, and Commercial, to influence and uphold contractual obligations related to MTP.
  • Lead the collection and analysis of data, performance trends, and incident reports for the MTP, informing decision-making and project adjustments.
  • Champion a strong safety culture within the project scope, ensuring compliance with safety standards and promoting a safety-first mentality among the team.
  • Operate with a degree of independence, maintaining communication with the Head of Infrastructure Assets & Assurance on strategic matters, and seeking guidance as necessary

About you

  • A tertiary degree in Rail Operations, Engineering, Business Management, or a related field is highly desirable. Advanced qualifications or certifications pertinent to rail industry standards and practices will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership and employee development experience, with a track record of guiding teams towards achieving organisational objectives.
  • Extensive experience and deep operational knowledge in railway operations, infrastructure maintenance, or a comparable field.
  • Proven experience in delivering services and managing projects across multiple business areas within a large-scale organisation.
  • Strong contractual negotiation skills with a proven ability to secure key outcomes that align with organisational goals.
  • Experience in contractual stakeholder management and conflict resolution is vital.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills, capable of addressing challenges at both the strategic and operational levels.
  • An analytical mindset and the ability to devise innovative solutions to complex issues are required.
