The team at QinetiQ are continuing to expand, and as such, we are now accepting applications for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering Services division , based in Sydney .
As the Principal Mechanical Engineer will be supporting our client with the design and integration of external payloads or platform into existing and upcoming Maritime Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS). This role will be integral to the success of our client’s engineering team, contributing to the design, fabrication, prototyping, and testing of Maritime RAS and other advanced platforms. The Principal Engineer will report to the relevant engineering delegation and play a pivotal role in assuring future capabilities.

Responsibilities:

Contribute and lead in a team environment on the design, fabrication, prototyping and testing of payload interface systems to existing and upcoming Maritime RAS.
Individually perform and coach others in all aspects of mechanical engineering.
Undertake a systems engineering approach to system and sub-system design, modelling and prototyping.
Production drawings applying and interpreting Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Review and approve designs, analyses, and engineering drawings to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
Conduct thorough design reviews to identify and mitigate potential risks.Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget constraints.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical designs with electrical, software, and other system components.
To be the successful candidate, you will need to bring with you;
Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with the equivalent of 10 years of experience.
Experience with 3D CAD Software (Autodesk Inventor).
Experience with Structural Analysis (hand calculations and finite element models).
Familiarity with fluid dynamics principles for underwater application.
2D Drawing applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per Australian Standard.
Design for manufacturing and assembly.
Product lifecycle management and requirement Verification and Validation.
Credibility, integrity and high personal ethical standards that align with QinetiQ requirements.
Excellent problem solving skills and attention to detail.
Experience with the integration of mechanical interfaces to existing Maritime RAS or similar.
Advanced knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes relevant to underwater applications.
Familiarity with systems engineering methodologies and management tool.
Familiarity with system integration and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Previous experience in Defence or Defence related industry.
Experience working as part of a team delivering capability outcomes to meet external priorities.
Experience with Defence ICT Systems and security, data storage, data distribution and data management systems, policies and processes.
Ability to manage competing priorities and respond to emerging business needs.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Prior experience leading and managing a professional, tertiary qualified workforce.
