Responsibilities:

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is seeking a highly motivated Principal Fatigue/Human Factors Advisor to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will play a leading role in developing and implementing initiatives to reduce fatigue risks and improve safety outcomes on our roads through the application of human factors principles.

What will you do?

  • Develop contemporary guidance material and risk-based regulations in collaboration with internal divisions, industry leaders, and research institutions.
  • Design clear and concise guidelines, rules, and procedures related to fatigue and human factors for NHVR staff and the heavy vehicle industry.
  • Provide expert advice to support informed decision-making on a range of legislative, strategic, and operational policy matters.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and review of practical guidance, resources, and tools related to human factors and fatigue risk management.
  • Represent the NHVR on committees and working groups, fostering collaboration and innovation to enhance national policy outcomes.
  • Conduct research and analyse safety data, issues and trends to provide authoritative safety, human factors and fatigue risk management advice.

Whilst the preference is to be located in Brisbane, for the right candidate, we will consider applications from other locations. Regular travel will form part of the role. About You
The role would suit an experienced Fatigue and/or Human Factors practitioner with impeccable communication and stakeholder management skills who can become a trusted partner to our people and our projects. We want to meet people who have:

  • Proven ability to engage systems thinking and operate at a strategic level.
  • Thorough knowledge (or demonstrated ability to quickly acquire a thorough knowledge) of fatigue and human factor issues as they relate to the heavy vehicle industry.
  • Demonstrated a high level of professional expert knowledge in work related fatigue/human factors, particularly relating to driving and/or shift work.

We’ll highly regard:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Fatigue, Human Factors, Psychology, Safety, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • Knowledge of or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of Heavy Vehicle National Law, the heavy vehicle regulatory environment and inter-relationships between state and territory governments and the NHVR..
  • Experience developing educational and support material, preferably in a regulatory environment.

As a natural communicator you will enjoy fostering authentic relationships through building rapport and trust with your ease at.
The ability to solve complex problems through analytical and out of the box thinking will be familiar to you. Along with your meticulous approach to planning and balancing competing priorities, your understanding of regulatory issues and concepts will be integral to this position, as you translate complex and technical language to a diverse stakeholder group.
