REQUIREMENTS

  • BEng Hons or equivalent in mechanical engineering, design, or equivalent.
  • Over 15 years of experience in leading the design, development, testing, and launch of hardware and mechatronics solutions in highly collaborative environments, within large and cross-functional teams.
  • A proven track record of building successful mechatronics solutions to complex and novel problems trailblazing design and technology as needed.
  • Experience architecting and implementing world-class, robust, and scalable engineered solution and systems for complex and big data challenges.
  • Experience leading interdisciplinary projects covering mechanical, electrical/electronic, and software engineering
  • Experience designing for a range of manufacturing and fabrication methods such as machining, sheet metal forming, moulding, 3D printing.
  • Strong understanding of core mechanical engineering principles such as material selection, GD&T, fluid mechanics
  • Experience designing low-pressure pneumatic and hydraulic systems, linear and rotating mechanical systems
  • Ability to communicate clearly with external partners to achieve rapid and cost-effective delivery of third-party materials and components
  • A strong record of innovation supported by patents and other Intellectual Property artefacts.
  • A critical eye to assess the performance of engineering teams and how to enable groups of engineers through best practices, best-in-class tool suites, optimal work cultures, and other elements of efficiency.
  • Recognized thought leader in the world of hardware engineering.

Responsibilities:

THE ROLE

As Chemify continues to automate all of chemistry, the Principal Hardware Engineer will join an effective product development team focused on quickly building, iterating on, and deploying modern automated systems, robotic platforms, tools, and processes to change the world of Chemistry through automation! The hardware engineer will build upon existing platforms and tools by bringing exceptional experience and know-how in advanced mechatronics and commercial grade hardware development to take on a key technical leadership role at the company: guiding complex design, integration, and decision-making towards the rapid realization of exceptional and custom hardware solutions powering Chemify factories in Glasgow Scotland and across the world. The successful candidate will rely on their tremendous track-record in successfully designing, building, testing, and launching world-class and high-quality robotics systems with significant impact at renowned organizations. To facilitate your role, Chemify boasts an industry-leading array of prototype manufacturing equipment, including advanced 3D printing technologies, CNC machining, and metal forming They will bring intensity to sustain the pace needed to ensure the rapid development of the core technology required for the success of an early stage organization.
The Principal Hardware Engineer will have the opportunity to collaborate very closely with Chemists, Cheminformaticians, software engineers, operations experts, management, and other hardware engineers to quickly design, develop, launch, and maintain complex hardware systems within Chemifys world-class solutions dedicated to Chemistry. The successful candidate will have a track record of transformative impact on hardware development: from single parts to complex functional electro-mechanical assemblies, etc… At this stage of their career, they remain extremely motivated to contribute hands-on and aggressively to the development of a hyper-growth, silicon-valley style start-up by delivering high-quality platforms at a high-pace in Glasgow, Scotland.
Additionally, the Principal Engineer will have a service mentality to understand the needs of the chemists and the business, and will use it to build high-quality solutions significantly improving short- and long-term performance of the companys laboratory. The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced and already successful engineer, a smart, enthusiastic, energetic, and ambitious individual excited to lead the development of the worlds best infrastructure for high-throughput chemistry that will eventually handle the worlds load of synthesis, at Chemify.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the maturation of existing and developing technologies towards commercial grade solutions elegantly meeting the business, user-experience, and operating needs of a rapidly growing company in a collaborative and high-octane environment.
  • Influence the direction of the companys overall hardware architectures to ensure tight fit to short-, medium-, and long-term business needs, consistent, logical, scalable, and robust solutions with cross-system optimizations to ensure overall operational efficiency.
  • Ensure solid Design for Manufacturing and Design for Maintenance to facilitate worldwide technology deployment across Chemifys highly versatile, high-throughput chemical factories.
  • Guide the implementation of the various hardware elements building into the overall Chemify platform by working closely with other engineers and creating processes and structures that will enable a continuously increasing number of high-quality contributions without direct supervision.
  • Thoughtfully assess the tools available to the hardware, manufacturing, service and support, and supply chain teams as well as the overall practices followed at the company. Quickly bring-in new solutions, technologies, and processes whenever warranted to ensure optimal performance in maintaining frequent high-quality feature and product releases while maintaining exceptional system reliability in production.
  • Dramatically improve company efficiency in short timelines to maximize the value created by existing and future technology products in a human-centric system. Help prioritize and guide technology development.
  • Introduce new processes and operational functions across the organization by integrating all components into highly efficient workflows decreasing costs, increasing quality, improving turn-around-time, and maximize the overall throughput of the organization.
  • Work with Software Engineering, Quality, Laboratory Operations, and Research Chemistry to optimize the day-to-day workflows of the laboratory and company in general to ensure safety, quality, efficiency, and scalability in the companys ability to deliver on multiple complex chemical synthesis campaigns in parallel, leveraging the companys core platform components.
  • Work with hardware engineering, software engineering, and other functions to prioritize, design, develop, and implement high quality workflows heavily reliant on existing and new technologies.
  • Work closely with management and other functions to analyze the efficiency of the laboratory, prioritize areas of improvements, and allocate resources to improve overall company efficiency quickly and aggressively.
  • Collaborate on the ideation and development of long-term plans for transformative performance improvements for the company.
  • Participate in other tasks across the company to ensure Chemifys ultimate success.
