About this role
Business Unit Overview:
BlackRock Private Debt is an investment pillar within Portfolio Management Group (PMG), BlackRock’s active management platform. We are a dedicated investment team focused on providing debt capital solutions through primarily directly originated investments across the capital structure. Functionally, the platform is organized into pillars, each corresponding to a different asset class within Private Debt: Real Estate Debt, Direct Corporate Lending, Opportunistic Debt and Multi-Strategy Debt..
Job Purpose/Background:
An opportunity has arisen to join the Core Portfolio Management (Core PM) team within Private Debt, based in London. This is an important role and offers a great opportunity to own critical responsibilities within the investment strategy, working closely with the relevant Portfolio Managers. The ideal candidate will handle a wide range of investment, operational and capital management responsibilities and will be able to work well independently and in a fast-moving team environment. The candidate must be well organized, flexible, and enjoy the challenge of working on multiple tasks. The ideal candidate should also be tech savvy. The role will be involved in both day-to-day portfolio and fund management, and longer-term strategic projects.

Key Responsibilities may include:

  • Investment Execution – working with portfolio managers, legal, tax, and operations on structuring and execution of investment opportunities.
  • Portfolio construction – proposing deal allocations across eligible funds considering fund objectives and constraints.
  • Portfolio Cash Management – forecasting / managing cash levels within fund / investment vehicles, co-ordination of investor capital calls and finance drawdowns to ensure funding requirements are met in a timely manner, co-ordination of distributions from fund / investment vehicles to investors, overseeing the payables (expenses, etc.) process where necessary.
  • Credit Facility – management of the Credit Facility line (drawdowns and repayment based on upcoming cash needs, interest payments, etc.) as well as covenants management.
  • FX Hedging – monitoring FX exposure and raising of spot and forward orders.
  • Fund Valuation – co-ordination and oversight of the Fund Valuation process by engaging with the Valuation Team across the different underlying strategies.
  • Client Reporting – working with support teams to develop and review custom reports.
  • Regulatory Reporting – review of regulatory reporting (as needed).
  • Policies & Procedures – formalize and document operating plans, policies and procedures with respect to critical processes such as performance track record, expense management, and investment allocation.
  • Strategic Projects – enhancement of processes and operating models, maximising automation
  • Blackrock Network – Develop close links across our key business partners in Finance, Technology, Legal & Compliance, Operations, and other groups to ensure our business leverages the full breadth of BlackRock.
  • Technology – partner with BlackRock’s Aladdin Product Group, Portfolio Analytics Group, and Business Operations teams to implement new technology initiatives.
  • Governance – assess and implement controls to ensure the appropriate governance system is in place.
  • Operational Oversight – engaging with operational support teams to ensure the smooth running of our fund structures.
  • Troubleshooting – troubleshooting ad hoc operational queries including risk and operating events, P&L issues, working with internal teams to implement both strategic and platform fixes.

Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Professional, academic or internship experience in a comparable industry (e.g. investment management, investment banking, management consulting, public accounting, fund administration).
  • Experience with alternative investments and alternative investment fund structures highly preferred.
  • Demonstrable passion for investing and financial markets.
  • Advanced excel skills.
  • Knowledge of Aladdin and eFront a plus.
  • Excellent project and time management skills; proven experience in organizing and managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to clearly articulate ideas, both written and verbal, to internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively at all levels of an organization and build strong relationships with team members, managers, and senior executives in multiple locations.
  • Intellectual curiosity and strong analytical, quantitative, and critical reasoning skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, working to tight deadline and flexible to meet workload.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Undergraduate degree.
