SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma in Chemical, Power Engineering Technology or equivalent work experience in the petrochemical industry including positions held with field duties; unit monitoring, sampling, equipment care, equipment preparation for maintenance and console operations.
  • 4th Class Power Engineering certificate required for business units consisting of fractionation and distillation systems/hydrocarbon conversion processes.
  • High school diploma, or equivalent, is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/ EXPERIENCE

  • Strong safety and work ethic, sound reasoning ability, good communication and interpersonal skills, high level of self-initiative, comfortable working within a team environment.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to build good, respectful working relationship in a team environment.
  • Flexible to work a twelve-hour rotating shift schedule involving inside and outside work.
  • Valid Alberta graduated Class 5 driver’s license and a safe driving record are required.

Responsibilities:

WHAT ROLE YOU WILL PLAY IN OUR TEAM

As a Process Technician at the Strathcona Refinery in Edmonton, AB, initially you will train as a member of our operating staff to gain practical hands-on experience with plant operating procedures and associated safety procedures. You will apply your skills in a business unit consisting of fractionation and distillation systems/hydrocarbon conversion. With a primary focus on the safe and efficient operation of refinery equipment, you will monitor equipment operation and process variables to identify and correct sub-optimal performance and conduct minor maintenance as needed. You will be responsible for ensuring that established loss control and environmental standards are consistently met, and will identify potential areas for improvement to streamline unit monitoring processes. On-the-job experience will be supplemented with additional related formal training. You will work in a refinery environment and will be required to work on your own following the initial training period and competency checkouts being completed.
Following your initial assignments and after becoming competent in all operating posts; as well as reaching career level, you may have the opportunity to be promoted into supervisory positions such as Controller, Process Field Supervisor, Process Planner, Process Mechanical Coordinator or senior supervisor positions such as a Process or Refinery Superintendent.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Understanding and abiding by all safety rules and standards, reporting hazards and assuming responsibility for the safe operation of your assigned unit, company vehicle and tools assigned to you.
  • Understanding and abiding by applicable government regulations, e.g. Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
  • Participating in safety programs, safety meetings and attending training sessions; completing self development courses.
  • Operating units including process equipment, exchangers, compressors, pumps and treaters.
  • Surveillance of equipment such as heat exchangers, furnaces, compressors, pumps, treaters, tanks, filters, etc.
  • Making process changes to ensure quality control of end products that are within accepted standards.
  • Working in a crew environment to manage activities involved with safe and efficient operation of all unit posts.
  • Participating as a team member to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities within the facility.
  • Safely performing physical tasks at times, e.g., lifting, climbing ladders/towers/tanks, confined space work.
  • Performing and maintaining a high standard of unit housekeeping.
  • Emergency responder to unit and refinery upsets.
