The Department of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology at Saarland University in
Saarbrücken is inviting applications for the following two positions which should integrate into the research
focus at UdS. The Department of Life Sciences has a focus on metabolism and epigenetics with a strong
interest in the development and application of cellular engineering approaches to uncover novel molecular
mechanisms. The Department has close research connections with research groups in biophysics,
bioinformatics, pharmacy and medicine.
The Department of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology at Saarland University in
Saarbrücken is inviting applications for the following two positions:
Professor (W2)
for Molecular and Cell Biology
(m/f/x; reference number W2433)
with a 5-year tenure track to a permanent professorship (W3).
Tenure track professors (W2) have faculty status at Saarland University, including the right to supervise
bachelor’s, master’s and PhD students. In case of outstanding performance, the position will be tenured as
full professor (W3). The tenure decision is made after 5 years.
We are looking for an outstanding and internationally visible early-career cell biologist, preferably someone
with a strong focus on mammalian cells. The ideal candidate will be expected to integrate with the current
research themes of the Biology department including metabolism and epigenetics and have a particular
focus on either organellar biology, (sub-)cellular communication or protein homeostasis and aggregation.
The candidate should be willing to apply ‘omics or cellular engineering approaches in their work and have
an interest in disease relevant research questions.

W3 Professorship
for Systems Physiology
(m/f/x; Reference no.: W2434)
We are looking for an internationally renowned physiologist with an interest in probing the mechanistic
underpinnings of systems-level control. The ideal candidate will be expected to integrate with the current
research themes of the Biology department including metabolism and epigenetics with a focus on multi-
cellular mammalian cell systems in health and disease. The candidate should have an interest in cellular
heterogeneity and/or communication within systems including mammalian tissue samples, organs,
organoids or stem cell-derived embryos. The candidate should be willing to apply ‘omics or cellular
engineering approaches in their work.
The professorships will be based in the Center for Human and Molecular Biology (ZHMB) on the
Saarbrücken campus and the successful candidates will be expected to actively contribute to and strengthen
current and future research activities. Close interaction with the Center for Bioinformatics, the Center for
Biophysics and the Faculty of Medicine is encouraged. An intensive exchange with the scientific institutions
in the vicinity of the University, including the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saar (HIPS)
and the Leibniz Institute for New Materials (INM), and an active participation in the development of joint
priority projects within the framework of the future strategies of the University is expected.
In teaching, the professorships are expected to fulfil the teaching of molecular and cell biology (W2TTW3
Professor for Molecular and Cell Biology) and physiology (W3 Professor in Systems Physiology) in the
Human and Molecular Biology Bachelor and Master programs. Both Professorships will also be required to
contribute to the teaching of trainee school teachers (Lehramtstudenten*innen). The professor of Systems
Physiology is responsible for the teaching degree programs in Biology (LS 1+2, LS 1, LAB). Commitment to
the German-French program in biology with the University of Strasbourg (BSc and MSc) is highly desirable.
In addition, support of teaching in related natural science disciplines is common. Innovative teaching
concepts for all curricular levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD) are also expected, as well as a willingness to teach in
English or German, to provide dedicated supervision of final theses, and to promote young scientists.
The appointment will be made in accordance with the general provisions of German public sector
employment law. Candidates must have experience in and an aptitude for academic teaching. They will have
a PhD or doctorate in an appropriate subject and will have demonstrated a particular capacity for
independent academic research, typically by having obtained an advanced, post-doctoral research degree
(Habilitation) or by having published an equivalent volume of peer-reviewed research or by having been
appointed to a junior professorship or equivalent position.
