Project Facilitator - Unlock Literacy

THE POSITION

Support the successful adaptation and implementation of the Unlock Literacy Model in partnership with Warlpiri communities. This will entail regular trips to community where you will work closely with community leaders, First Nations community based staff, children, implementing partners and other stakeholders to implement this evidence based project model which supports bi-lingual literacy development.
The role will support the project across three remote Aboriginal communities located in Central Australia - Nyirripi, Lajamanu and Willowra.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Facilitating book making workshops with community leaders and children
• Mentoring Warlpiri community facilitators and project partners to implement activities which raise the agenda of literacy in community and support bi-lingual literacy development.
• Facilitating workshops with Warlpiri community facilitators and project partners to develop activities and resources to support literacy development
• Establishing and supporting reference groups in each community to build local decision making and accountability for the project.
• Working closely with World Vision’s Program Development and Effectiveness Team to capture and share learnings across project sites and that we are problem solving and finding solutions to challenges
• Working closely with the Project Manager for Unlock Literacy, ensure workplans are developed, project activities are undertaken according to project implementation plans and that reports are complete in a timely manner.
• Coach and mentor local Aboriginal Community Development Facilitators across the project sites to develop their facilitation skills, support the adaptation of project materials for the Warlpiri context and establish plans for after school activities which they will implement in partnership with local schools, learning centres, art centres, media programs and youth programs
• Establishing strong relationships, networks and partnerships with key stakeholders and community leaders within the local communities
• Ensure expenditure associated with activities are within agreed budget and recorded accurately
• Participate in and assist to prepare for reflection workshops held regularly with the project team
• Collect data and assist in preparing reports in line with grant and program requirements

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for someone with experience in remote communities, who is flexible, motivated and great at establishing relationships.

You will have:

• Proven success implementing activities as per project plan to achieve targeted outcomes
• Demonstrated professional experience working in a development context with children, young people, adults and elders in remote Aboriginal communities
• Experience facilitating community consultations and influencing community participation
• Experience working collaboratively with remote First Nations communities
• Ability to interact with children and young people and gain their ideas and input in a fun and engaging way
• Creative and engaging group facilitation skills with a range of audiences
• An understanding of the cultural, political, economic and social issues affecting Aboriginal people in Central Australia
• Good understanding of and firm commitment to inclusive, equitable, participatory and rights-based community development theory and approaches
• The ability to live remotely in Alice Springs NT and travel to remote communities at least 2 weeks per month
• Degree qualification in Linguistics, Behavioural or Social Sciences, education or community development or equivalent experience
