Job Description
We are looking to hire an experienced prototype test equipment designer on a permanent basis to support our Gas Seal R&D organisation. The role is based in the R&D testing team at the John Crane Slough manufacturing and engineering facility. The role consists of supporting the new product development teams, by developing bespoke equipment for testing of new prototype gas seal products. This means working close with the prototype products, and development teams. The engineer will need to understand the current testing capabilities and help develop and implement the future capabilities. The prototyping test equipment designer will need to be able create unique equipment that can consist of rotating components, heat exchanger and pressure vessels. A good understanding of static and dynamic structures as well as fluid thermal dynamics is important. The engineer will also be responsible for designing test jigs and fixtures that help with assembly of product and test equipment. As the engineering will work with designing pressurized high energy equipment the role has a dotted line reporting structure to the operational (production) test equipment design team. This is to ensure safety design standards and met and standard practices are followed. The R&D group is always looking for improvement in process and equipment. Therefore, the Prototyping Test Equipment Designer will be involved in Bi-weekly CI session for identifying and executing improvements within the department and team. Duties & Responsibilities (not limited to)
Test POD and Equipment Design: • To design, using CAD, and maintain technical drawings and data for testing equipment for Gas Seal R&D • To ensure designs are to correct standards regarding safety and design practices • Keep all test equipment documentation up to date and stored • To manage the health and storage of R&D test equipment • Ensure test equipment is available for new product development test plans • Obtain quotes and off load work that cannot be manufactured in house to correct sub-contractors • Support design and specification of test rigs Continuous Improvement Activities: • Support R&D with issues with test rigs and test equipment. • Identify and complete CI projects Tasks Management: • Provide updates to key stakeholders • Manage workload using lean agile principles Attend Bi-weekly sprint planning and review meetings
The Individual
• Degree / HND educated in an appropriate technical subject • “Hands On” Engineer, prepared to get involved with the testing team to further understanding • Previous experience in designing equipment is a must • Good knowledge of rotor dynamics, static structures and thermal dynamics • Previous experience in pressure system design is an advantage • Experience in using Continuous Improvement tools and techniques would be an advantage • Advanced MS Office skills • Proficiency in CAD, (Solid edge is an advantage) • Ability to read engineering drawings and a good understanding of geometric tolerances and limits and fits • Good understanding of conventional manufacturing method (turning, milling, grinding) • Knowledge of new advanced manufacturing methods: Advantages and disadvantages • Decision making ability and good influencing / team working skills • Time management and organizational skills •Self-driven with good attention to detail
