Description:
Driftpile Cree Nation is a proud and culturally strong First Nation located between the towns of Slave Lake from the west, and High Prairie from the east, approximately 340 km northwest of Edmonton. The Nation is nestled on the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake. As the second-largest lake entirely within the Alberta boundaries Lesser Slave Lake is a stunning destination for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. JOB OVERVIEW: The Public Health Nurse (LPN) works directly with the community to educate and promote public wellness. Through education, the LPN helps to prevent disease and reduce health risks within the population. Partnering with other Maggie Willier Wellness Centre departments utilizing all resources and a shared care model where applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of Licensed Practical nurse program.
- Active registration with CARNA and/or CRPNA in good standing.
- 2-5 years of nursing experience.
- Certified in First-aid CPR/AED, HCP, and WHMIS.
- Knowledgeable of Federal and Provincial Health Systems, and of pertinent health issues affecting the community.
- Proficient use of MS Office and web-based programs.
- Comprehensive knowledge of First Nations people, values, and culture.
- Demonstrate professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license, with clean driver abstract
- Fluency in Cree is considered an assist.
- Criminal, Vulnerable and Child Intervention record checks are required for this position
Responsibilities:
- Provision of universal Public Health services including antenatal/prenatal care; routine postnatal care & education; health assessment, counseling, screening, immunization; follow up; & referral, linkage, advocacy, consultation, & teaching as they relate to preschool school-aged children, families, adults, and seniors.
- Record, analyze, and assess medical data reporting any health trends of the community to the Nurse in Charge for discussion of plan implementation.
- Educate patients about available support services providing access to such care, completing referrals as needed.
- Organize and promote community engagements tailored to community health and wellness.
- Emphasize primary prevention in order to avoid disease or injury before it occurs.
- Inform, apply, and integrate research and evidence-based best practice related to nursing and health-related disciplines into professional practice.
- Develop relationships with and evaluate the health of patients and assist in the creation of treatment plans following up and tracking progress.
- Assess health center client walk-ins and refer or provide necessary care and treatment within the scope of practice.
- Lead and participate in all organized public health-related clinics (i.e., diabetics, foot care, nutrition, etc.)
- Work with public health officials to help communities gain access to care.
- Monitor patients for any changes in condition.
- Fully comply with all Maggie Willier Wellness Centre & Driftpile Cree Nation policies, procedures, health safety, and PPE protocols - including the fitness for duty policy stipulating zero-tolerance for being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
- The Public Health LPN is a key team member and may be asked to carry out other duties and activities related to the effectiveness and the successful implementation of the Maggie Willier Wellness Centre.
