OVERVIEW:

The Grid Communications and Security Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly qualified and experienced research professional to lead and develop cutting-edge capabilities related to sensors, data analytics and security for grid, autonomous systems, autonomous agents (autonomous intelligent measurement systems), networking, embedded systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), and related systems’ technologies. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects at the intersection of these technologies and to collaborate with professionals across the Laboratory to advance the field of networking, sensors, advancing communications (optical, wired and wireless), system security, and embedded systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading one research theme and managing research projects to support one or more the Grid Communications and Security Group’s research themes. The candidate should be a thought leader in conducting research on advancing technologies with applications in multiple sectors. An example application is for enhanced grid resilience and reliability technologies and achieving transformative changes in defining the grid of the future. In addition, the candidate shall be able to communicate and influence stakeholders (including internal and external, government and private sector) on new concepts, R&D opportunities, and results, and shall work collaboratively to support other ORNL staff and to offer career guidance and mentoring to junior staff.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in energy science, computer engineering, or a related field and at least three years of relevant experience. An undergraduate degree in physics, mathematics or related discipline is required.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing machine learning algorithms for real-time data analysis and anomaly detection.
  • Strong understanding of sensors and data analysis in performance and security challenges and potential solutions in the IoT and communication space.
  • Demonstrated experience with the development and deployment of embedded systems, IoT solutions, next generation communication systems (for drone-based integrated systems)
  • Strong research experience in networks and protocols such as LoRa and mobile networks.
  • The candidate should have excellent oral skills to make presentations and written communication skills to prepare reports and proposals.
  • Experience with cloud and edge computing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated leadership in the sensors, integrated secure data analysis and embedded systems community, as demonstrated through publications and professional organization membership.
  • Strong track record of leading teams responsible for the development, implementation, and deployment of cyber security, embedded systems, IoT, mobile networks and communication solutions.
  • Experience in Python, C/C++ and Java programming.
  • Experience in Kernel level Linux development.
  • Experience in NI PXI and Xilinx development environments.
  • Active involvement in professional societies and collaborative working experience with diverse types of stakeholders.

  • Lead and support initiatives in the field of cyber security, embedded systems, IoT, and advancing communication that fulfill the goals of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and its partners.
  • Prepare proposals and associated materials to advance new ideas and opportunities.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Mentor students and provide guidance and support to junior researchers.
  • Work cooperatively while advancing the standing of the group as a whole through collaborations, professional society memberships, and technical presentations.
  • Stay up to date on new and emerging technologies and identify opportunities to apply them in a research and development environment.
  • Provide scientific direction, guidance, and mentorship to fellow scientists, engineers, and other staff.
