Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) currently has an exciting Research & Development Design Engineering opportunity, supporting our Accessories team. This is a 24-month contract/acting opportunity and will report to the Accessories Development Manager. The selected candidate will develop select Genuine Toyota & Lexus accessory products and vehicle enhancements that comply with Toyota standards and specifications while meeting performance, compliance, quality, cost, mass, and timing targets. The successful candidate will provide technical support for the design, development and launch of accessories for a team of product development engineers.

What You’ll be Doing:

  • Provide technical support for design, development and launch of accessories
  • Lead Design Review (DR) activities, both internally and with other Toyota affiliates
  • Conduct parts development projects from product concept to production launch, while meeting quality, cost and timing targets
  • Identify bottlenecks, foresee challenge points and propose countermeasure activities to ensure quality products are being launched according to schedule
  • Coordinate and lead design review activities for new products
  • Support team members in conducting supplier sourcing and pricing negotiations with the Planning department
  • Develop and maintain project tracking schedules and planning documents for team members and assigned product categories
  • Explore and recommend new products while planning for future products
  • Review Manufacturing Quality Charts (MQCs) for new products, consult with vendors to help set up production in compliance with TCI’s certified vendor program
  • Provide updates regarding engineering activities and project progress
  • Review Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) design guides and technical standards to ensure product development meets engineering performance, compliance, durability and quality requirements
  • Assist and review product design and validation requirements with vendors; verify vendor capabilities and results regarding product design and drawing requirements, product quality, validation testing, documentation, product installation process, and training
  • Support supplier quality and capability audits of new and existing vendors
  • Define and communicate technical requirements to vendors regarding design and test specifications, and vehicle integration needs for new products
  • Collaborate with team members to evaluate and ensure vendor designs and test results meet Toyota requirements (includes Design Validation Plan, Failure Modes Analysis, Fire Hazard Prevention, and Misuse Risk Prevention).
  • Acquire and evaluate vehicle and accessory CAD data for product design development
  • Determine vehicle accommodations required for design integration of accessory products
  • Engage in achieving Accessory Product Approval
  • Support Quality Engineering in the investigation and resolution of field quality and warranty related issues
  • Follow up with escalated quality related activities
  • Provide status summary of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through appropriate reporting and Kaizen (continuously improve) activities
  • Maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and reflect modifications or improvements

What You’ll Bring:

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with strong Electrical Engineering knowledge/experience
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering, preferably with exposure to multiple aspects of engineering including project management, design, quality and manufacturing
  • Strong knowledge of the automobile and the automotive design process and supply chain
  • Prior work experience in the electrical vehicle industry is an asset
  • Team player with the ability to partner effectively with business units and external stakeholders
  • Strong project management and multitasking skills
  • Excellent communication & presentation skills
  • Ability to work against strict deadlines and set priorities to achieve targets
  • Proven ability to persuade, influence and negotiate to achieve tangible results
  • Proven ability to initiate and improve work processes through information management systems or daily operations
  • Working knowledge of CATIA or equivalent software is an asset
  • P. Eng. license or equivalent is an asset
  • Ability to travel
