We are looking for a R&D Electrical Engineer at ABB Oy, Marine & Ports division in Vuosaari, Helsinki. In this position, you will be working with Azipod® and ABB Dynafin? R&D electrical development initiatives in close co-operation with internal and external stakeholders. Preparing technical documentation, participating in testing activities as well as co-operation with suppliers are important parts of your work.
Azipod® propulsion is a gearless steerable propulsion system where the electric drive motor is in a submerged pod outside the ship hull. Azipod® units can rotate 360 degrees to increase maneuverability and operating efficiency.
ABB Dynafin? is a new concept representing a revolutionary propulsion system breaking new ground for efficiency in the marine industry. Inspired by the dynamic motions of a whale’s tail, the innovative concept is the result of over a decade of research, development, and testing.

This position reports to R&D Team Manager
Your responsibilities
- Developing dedicated Azipod and Dynafin technology R&D initiatives
- Preparing technical documentation
- Different development project related tasks in the guidance of the project’s Lead Engineer and Project Manager
- Actively participating in hands-on testing activities alongside the team of engineers and technicians
- Communicating with both internal and external stakeholders
- Occasional traveling might be required to meet customers and suppliers
Your background
- Technical expertise in electrical and electronic systems, especially electric drives and motors. Experience in power electronics and control automation engineering is seen as an advantage
- Competencies for driving test activities with strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Hands-on experience in the design and implementation of test set-ups is a benefit
- Ideal candidate for this position would have some experience from electrical engineering, field activities and marine business
- Self-driven, solution focused and strong forward going attitude; challenges motivate you
- An organized way of working and willingness to take responsibility, ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or in other related field
- Strong communication skills in English are required and Finnish proficiency (both spoken and written) is seen as an asset
