  • Conducting experiments and data collection to evaluate long-term behavior and licensing of dry storage canisters and casks;
  • Collecting experimental data for assessing response of safety components to severe environments, and/or providing realistic data to benchmark computer codes;
  • 3D Printing components for testing
  • Perform R&D in an environment to address technical and safety issues associated with the storage, transportation, and disposal of nuclear wastes, including:
  • Modeling and analyses of nuclear waste life-cycle processes,
  • Modeling and analyses of thermal, criticality, and waste form behavior associated with the geologic disposal of nuclear waste, including dual-purpose canisters (DPCs),
  • Analyses of storage and transportation methods for spent nuclear fuel, including R&D on fuel cladding and dry cask storage systems,
  • Modeling of thermal-hydraulic conditions in dry cask storage systems,
  • Evaluation of impact and consequence associated with security aspects of managing radioactive materials,
  • Planning and analyses for deep borehole disposal of nuclear waste.
  • Perform field work and occasional activity level work, as necessary.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at least 60%.

QUALIFICATIONS WE REQUIRE

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or other relevant field plus one or more years of relevant experience; OR equivalent combination of relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Experience conducting research
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent

QUALIFICATIONS WE DESIRE

  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the technical disciplines; mechanical components testing, nuclear waste handling, radiation effects testing, and storage, transportation, and disposal of nuclear waste
  • Basic understanding and/or capabilities for analyzing nuclear waste storage, transportation, and disposal systems
  • Experience running or participating in large-scale tests
  • Demonstrated experience working in team environments with other scientists and engineers
