Description:

JOB SUMMARY:

The Department of Theatre and Dance of Bucknell University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Theatre History, Dramatic Literature, and Acting, with a start date of August 2024 and end date mid-May 2025. This position consists of a 5-course teaching load in addition to directing a mainstage production in the artistic season. The candidate should be a student-centered teacher-scholar-artist who will support a theatre and dance curriculum that promotes equity, inclusion, and a liberal arts mission.

Responsibilities:

The five required courses will include: Acting I; Script Analysis; Introduction to Theatre; and 2 courses in theatre history ("Rituals, Festival, and Institutions” and “Theatre and Revolution” or a history course in the candidate’s research area). All courses are taught with a liberal arts ethos and an emphasis on performance practice. The candidate will also direct a mainstage production that is drawn from a department-selected shortlist of three plays.
Additional responsibilities may include mentorship of student directing, production dramaturgy, or intimacy choreography, depending on departmental needs, artistic season, and the candidate’s area of interest and qualifications. Faculty members participate fully in department meetings and will be expected to contribute to the arts community at Bucknell.
It is preferred that the candidate hold a PhD in Theatre; however, candidates who hold MFA degrees will be considered, as will ABD doctoral candidates. The successful candidate must demonstrate experience in directing at the undergraduate level, commitment to undergraduate teaching, and strong evidence of work as a collaborator and a mentor with excellent communication skills. We welcome candidates with a broad range of scholarly interests and specializations.
Bucknell University, an EEOC Employer, believes that students learn best in a diverse, inclusive community and is committed to academic excellence through diversity in its faculty, staff, and students. We seek candidates committed to Bucknell’s efforts to create a climate that fosters the growth and development of a diverse student body, and we welcome applications from members of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
To Apply: For additional information and to apply, please visit Bucknell’s career site at https://www.bucknell.edu/careers-bucknell . The application should include a Curriculum Vitae, cover letter, and statements of teaching and artistic philosophy which includes a discussion of the candidate’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The aforementioned materials should include evidence of directing. Applicants should be prepared during the interview process to provide names and contact information for three professional references. Applications will be accepted until March 22. The review of applications will begin March 25, and we seek to fill the position by April 30. Questions may be addressed to Professor Dustyn Martincich (dm048@bucknell.edu), Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.
This is a full-time, one-year, benefits-eligible, exempt faculty position. Bucknell offers a competitive wage and comprehensive benefits plan.
