Job Description Overview: Under Minimal supervision, repairs railcars per written work order, by replacing, welding, and straightening various parts and areas on railcars. Other duties such as track repair, training and NDT testing may be required at times. Must Possess valid driver’s license and be insurable by company insurance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Is safety minded and pushes safety throughout the shop. Ensures all employees are compliant with all safety rules, procedures, and regulations.
  • Is a qualified welder per VLS welding procedures or can be soon. Able to set welding machine for proper use and welds in all positions. Fits and fabricates materials for cars or special projects. Completes welding on critical jobs such as tank shell material, draft sill, and tank attachments.
  • Is qualified to weld tank car inserts or cracks and all welds shall consistently pass UT flaw or X-ray.
  • Shows ability to supervise and assist in directing employees and workflow.
  • Has knowledge and capacity to complete in-process or NDT inspections and paperwork.
  • Continuously completes tasks in the specified amount of time.
  • Assist supervisor and/or leadman in training and direction of assigned subordinates.
  • Removes and fits parts according to regulations and specifications.
  • Instructs others in welding techniques and safety.
  • Completes welding requirements on critical jobs such as center filler, center sill and draft sill.
  • Examines welding for bead size and other specifications.
  • Cleans or degreases welding joint or workpiece.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
  • Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheat workpiece with hand torch.
  • Positions and clamps workpieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture.
  • Tacks assemblies together.
  • Safely uses torch for cutting metal.
  • Understands and complies with all safety regulations.
  • Has a basic understanding of the AAR Field Manual, customer requirements and VLS requirements as the pertain to repairs for both Hoppers and Tanks.

Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic knowledge and general use of hand and power tools required.
  • Mechanical, welding or valve knowledge/experience a plus

OTHER (I.E., PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, TRAVEL, ETC. THAT IS NOT COVERED ABOVE):

  • Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions.
  • Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods.
  • Lifting - (vertically) 50 lbs. vertical lift from 0 inches to 36 inches from the floor x 5
  • Pushing/Pulling – 50 lbs. for a distance of 10ft x 5
  • Confined Access – Access space with a height of 24 inches x 1
  • Repetitive Posture – Forward bend to reach a point six inches from the floor x 5
  • Crawl – Forward ten feet x 1
  • Climbing – Vertical ladder 4ft x 4
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments.
