As the Real Estate Industry Associate Underwriting Director at The Hartford, your primary role is the successful execution of our Real Estate Industry Practice underwriting guidance through the management of a geographic territory assignment. This position requires collaborative knowledge sharing discussions with our local office underwriting teams, as well as, managing individual account referral activity for all property and casualty lines on a guaranteed cost basis.
This role also contributes to the establishment of underwriting guidelines, product enhancements in partnership with line of business product teams, and share in the design and implementation of underwriting training in support of the Real Estate Industry Practice.
Mentoring, coaching and influencing are critical skills for success in this role. This role will be accountable for the financial profit and growth results for their assigned offices/divisions acting in partnership with local office/division leadership to execute on strategic initiatives within the Real Estate portfolio. The Real Estate Industry portfolio is defined as: Real Estate, Hospitality, Restaurants, Retail and Wholesale.

Responsibilities

  • Engage and understand the local marketplace, competitors, market trends, and opportunities associated with your office assignments.
  • Promote an increase in local office underwriting knowledge by providing technical underwriting. guidance on risk selection, exposure analysis, loss analysis/ adequate loss picks, pricing adequacy, proper program structure, and the appropriate overall account level risk reward.
  • Work closely with local office underwriters to understand, evaluate, and identify new business opportunities and renewal programs that will deliver our planned financial results.
  • One Hartford mindset with a passion for cross selling and seeking out every potential solution for a customer across our MLC/GS product capabilities.
  • Provide consultation and technical underwriting expertise to local office underwriters on formal account referrals from prospect stage through final approval stage.
  • Foster strong relationships with internal customers (local office underwriters, Managing Directors, RVPs and DEs).
  • In partnership with your local office teammates, engage with our specialized Real Estate agents/brokers by acting as a subject matter expect and seeking out opportunities to discuss market trends, opportunities, and product & service needs.
  • Capitalize on opportunities and recognize the need to take-action on profit improvement areas within the portfolio.
  • Embrace new ideas in support of innovation, product development and appetite expansion
  • Serve as mentor to local office underwriters in your assigned offices striking the right balance between positive and constructive feedback.
  • Be responsive, act with a sense of urgency, offer solutions, promote teamwork, and collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of Middle Market Property and Casualty lines underwriting experience is required
  • Strong technical underwriting skills with the ability to make timely and quality underwriting decisions
  • Understands the underwriting issues, product needs and competitive environment for the Real Estate industry
  • Ability to interact effectively and build strong relationships with individuals internally and externally
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving and innovative thinking
  • Prior experience in leading projects or as an assigned mentor desired
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • BS/BA degree or equivalent in experience.
  • CPCU or other related designation(s) a plus.
  • This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in a Hartford office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday)

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$129,680 - $194,520
