Description:

  • To ensure confident, competent nurse management of chemotherapy administration and other supportive and therapeutic treatments to patients within a specialist team
  • Provide direct high standards of evidenced based nursing care for patients primarily in the administration of chemotherapy and related oncologic therapies.
  • To complete the first level assessment of patients with cancer and their families to gain an understanding of their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that these needs are met. This will include: Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
  • Ensure the safe administration of chemotherapy systemic anticancer therapies regimes and safely dispose of all equipment by adhering to hospital policy and following recognized protocols
  • Assess patients’ physical condition and interpret blood results according to recognized protocols ensuring patients are fit to receive their prescribed chemotherapy
  • Liaises with medical staff and off-site oncology team if patient’s condition necessitates further treatment.
  • Educate patients and families regarding the side effects of chemotherapy and the oncology disease process.
  • As a specialist chemotherapy nurse, to assess the educational and informational needs of the patient and family. This includes producing and using appropriate materials to ensure optimum understanding of treatment process and the likely outcome.
  • Act as a resource for patients, families and other health professionals.
  • Coordinate chemotherapy orders with physicians and physician’s nurses.
  • Mix and administer chemotherapy, hydration and other medications as ordered.
  • Administer medicines as prescribed with adherence to NMCSH Guidelines for Medicines Administration and Medication Management Policy.
  • Adherent the practice of Medication Review
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures including starting peripheral IVs and drawing blood from midline catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters, and ports. Utilizes cannulation skills to gain intravenous access. Assesses patients with difficult venous access and make recommendations for alternative routes of venous access and then either makes arrangements to site PICC line or refers on to appropriate personnel for skin-tunneled catheter.
  • Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.
  • Monitor patients during administration of chemotherapy systemic anticancer therapy and instigate appropriate emergency treatment in the event of adverse reactions to chemotherapy or other supportive treatments
  • Provide follow up care/maintenance for central venous/PICC lines for patients and advise other health care professionals as appropriate to ensure that the patients line is cared for in accordance with local policies and procedure.
  • Ensure the protocols on proper disposal of cytotoxic drugs in an appropriate way.
  • To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge / transfer discussing this with the patient, their family and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert the head nurse/shift in charge/nursing supervisor and case management team of any changes. To set goals for each of the identified nursing issues and encourage / teach other nursing staff to do the same. To help the patient achieve set goals through care planning.
  • Demonstrate competency in cardio pulmonary resuscitation and participates as a member of Code Blue in the department.
  • Identifies learning needs of the patient and families and educates by adapting to patient and family learning style utilizing the teach-back method
  • To look after all patients in protective and contact isolation as necessary with strict infection control measures, while educating and giving psychosocial support to them, their families and more junior members of staff.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills during all phases of the therapeutic relationship.
  • Acts as a resource to other Cancer Clinic nursing staff and participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of educational initiatives and policies and procedures.
  • To assist research nurses in the care of patients undergoing clinical trials and adhere to the principle of informed consent and advocacy.
  • To undertake all nursing procedures in line with NMCSH policy and procedure.
  • Make sure carry out of doctor’s order & blood sample should collect and send on right time in order to get result on time.
  • To be aware of the emotional demands that come with treating cancer patients and their families.
  • Document patient history, physical examination data, nursing care plan and interventions, and the clients’ responses in the client’s record in a timely manner in accordance with the NMCSH Standards of Oncology Nursing Documentation Competencies and established organizational documentation standards.
  • Sets up equipment for and assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Demonstrate awareness of fire/equipment hazards and the necessary precautions to be activated as per hospital policy.
  • Participates in scheduled continuing nursing education.
  • Accept the challenge of changes that are occurring within the department and within oncology nursing locally and nationally
  • Monitor hospital environment for compliance with Infection Control policy and Procedures.
  • Responsible for daily checking of crash carts and emergency equipments as per hospital policy.
    To follow appropriate international guidelines, DHA regulations & Joint Commission International norms while treating or managing patients as well as while discharging their professional duties.
