ADDENDUM: POSITION SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Registered Nurse: Inpatient Ward
The Inpatient Ward offers a wide variety of acute medical, medical stabilisation, resuscitation, rehabilitation, and palliative care
services. The ward admits general medical patients, rehabilitation patients, e.g., those with heart failure, exacerbation of COPD, post
stroke rehabilitation, recovery from joint surgery e.g., hip replacement, knee replacement or improvement of health status of the
more debilitated elderly. In addition, the ward also covers the afterhours GP service seven days a week as well as providing nursing
support to the Mobile Surgical Services bus.
KEY ATTRIBUTES/ AND SPECIFIC SKILLSET REQUIREMENTS:
The attributes required for a person to be fully competent in position are as follows:
Education and Qualifications • Competent Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP)
(or equivalent level of learning) profile/portfolio or completion of same within 12 months, (preferable)
- Commitment to completing mandatory training and self-learning packages within
agreed timeframes, as required by the service and organisation.
Experience • Two-year post registration experience (preferred)
- Ability to work autonomously as well as within a team.
- Experience or interest in general medical nursing an advantage.
Knowledge and Skills • Provision of care to patients with acute and chronic medical conditions
- Provision of care & management of patients in rehabilitation programmes, post-
surgery, or medical conditions.
- Provision of palliative care to terminally ill patients utilising the Te Ara Whakapiri
guidelines
- IV Certification, IV Cannulation/Venepuncture, BiPAP, PICC, including all learning
modules as required
- Core Advanced Certification (Level 6), Lab Analysis
- Clinical assessment skills – specific to the Inpatient Area and/or afterhours GP service
- Resuscitation, medical stabilisation & surgical skills - specific to Inpatient Area and/or
supporting the Mobile Surgical Bus
- Demonstrated effective time management and prioritisation.
- Willingness to undertake post graduate education related to general medical nursing
issues.
Other • Be flexible in duties including enabling cover for annual, sick and education leave
and/or agreed roster changes.
