Under the supervision of the consultant psychiatrist the role of the Registrar is to provide effective treatment and care for patients and residents admitted to the “Approved Centre” incorporating the general adult acute mental health services (in-patient and Day Hospital) and Psychiatry of Later Life.

QUALIFICATIONS AND/ OR EXPERIENCE

Candidates must:

  • MB, Bch essential
  • General Registration with Irish Medical Council essential
  • BLS essential, ACLS essential; APLS highly desirable
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in general medical practice
  • Competent in emergency procedures – e.g., intubations
  • Relevant experience in a medical and mental health setting
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Adaptability to changes in healthcare
  • Works well within team environment
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • To promote patient care by liaising with all departments
  • Ensure appropriate and timely communication as required with Admissions Staff, Ward Manager and staff, and consultant in charge of patient
  • To participate in any in-service training as required such as CPR, Health and Safety, fire training etc.
  • To provide in-service training to staff where requested and appropriate.
  • Ensure on-going continuous professional development by reading current medical and psychiatric journals and on-going professional training.
  • Empathising with patients, their family and friends and adopt a customer-focused approach at all times.
  • Adhere to the clinic dress code as required.
  • As the service needs of the “Approved Centre” change, the above duties will be subject to change and flexibility.

Responsibilities:

As directed by the consultant psychiatrist/clinical director, the Registrars’ standard duties and responsibilities include:

  • Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the provision of medical and psychiatric care to patients.
  • Diagnose and treat patients.
  • Ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that priorities the safety and wellbeing of patients.
  • Assess patients on admission and/or discharge as required and record within the patient’s chart to support the development of an Integrated Care Plan (ICP)
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
  • Initiate and monitor treatment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families and other staff members.
  • Attend clinics and participate in relevant meetings, case conferences, ward rounds and reviews of day hospital patients, followed by documentation of findings on each patients chart; follow through with actions arising therefrom.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary clinical audit and proactive risk management initiatives including the collation and analyses of data.
  • Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality and ethics; abide by the Irish Medical Council ‘Guide to Ethical Conduct and Behaviour (
  • Seek advice and assistance from the consultant psychiatrist and/or clinical director with any assigned cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of his/her professional competence in line with principles of best practice and clinical governance.
  • Engage in technological developments as they apply to the patient and service administration e.g., Electronic Mental Health records.
  • Comply with statutory and regulatory requirements, agreed training principles and where appropriate, corporate policies and procedures and human resource policies and procedures.
  • Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of relevant / designated individual(s) in line with best practice and be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.
  • Participate in quality enhancement and service evaluation projects and any research which may be relevant to either short or long-term service improvement.
  • To participate in education and health promotion activities and to be pro-active in liaising on a regular basis with referring General Medical Practitioners and other hospital and consultant referrers to the organisation.
  • To observe the organisation’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of Highfield Healthcare.
  • Perform other duties appropriate to the post as required by the supervising consultant psychiatrist and/or clinical director.
