EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree In Accounting, finance, or a related field
  • Eight years of professional job-related work experience
  • Experience in the insurance industry, preferably Life, A&H or other long-duration insurance
  • Experience and proficiency using financial systems user applications (SAP preferred)
    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE PREFERRED

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation
  • Reinsurance accounting and administration experience

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establishes and monitors compliance standards and requirements for reinsurance activities on both an operational and accounting basis.
  • Works proactively with Financial Shared Services and other subject matter experts (both internal and external) to learn and document the Company’s reinsurance activities.
  • Participates on cross-functional reinsurance team of U.S., Bermuda and Japan-based professionals (Actuarial, Modeling, Administration, Accounting, FP&A and Treasury personnel) to evaluate and implement future reinsurance transactions.
  • Documents how reinsurance activities are reflected in the Company’s accounting and reporting systems on both a US GAAP and Statutory basis from a process and control perspective; documentation is maintained to meet business and operational needs, and to maintain compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) 404 and Model Audit Rule (MAR).
  • Manages the documentation and administration of reinsurance treaty agreements to ensure adherence to treaty provisions and requirements and to facilitate periodic cash settlements.
  • Validates and documents the Company’s reinsurance accounting within the ERP system to ensure compliance with accounting requirements and/or to identify areas for improvement and correction.
  • Partners with cross-functional team to plan and implement future reinsurance transactions to execute Aflac’s capital strategy and management.
  • Partners with current Japanese leadership and Aflac Re, Bermuda leadership and financial reporting team to facilitate capital strategy execution and related financial and capital reporting requirements for our Bermuda-based reinsurance captive entity.
  • Works with the Financial Reporting team to complete all monthly, quarterly and annual accounting requirements including journal entries and review for reinsurance-related activity and accruals.
  • Works effectively with business and accounting partners, if improvements or corrections are needed, to ensure that these are clearly documented and implemented in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Creates and maintains executive summaries in conjunction with the supporting detailed documentation of the operational and accounting processes and controls for all of the Company’s existing reinsurance programs.
  • Responds to reinsurance related ad hoc requests; prepares reinsurance analytical reporting; presents reinsurance financial results to management on a monthly basis.
  • Coordinates and prepares reinsurance related audit work; coordinates internal and external audits for reinsurance.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the Financial Reporting Department’s system of internal control, including the documentation of material changes to the process including organizational changes, system modifications, and procedural changes; analysis of Internal Control Assessment documents to assess the relevancy of key processes, risks, and internal control structure for the reporting process; performs process control testing, validations and reconciliations; provides assurances and supporting evidence to aid in Aflac’s compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Section 302 and 404 regulations, and Model Audit Rule (MAR) requirements.
  • Performs analysis on financial statements to identify anomalies for management review; compiles and reviews documentation for quarterly and annual reporting and ensures compliance with all relevant disclosure requirements; collects, organizes, analyzes, and evaluates complex financial and statistical data and other related information; completes reviews, and prepares required internal and external records, reports, statistics, financial statements, analysis, stockholders’ reports, etc.; develops and presents conclusions and recommendations to management.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with business partners and assists business partners to understand the reinsurance implications (both operational and accounting) of specific activities and reporting for the Company.
  • Technically, this position must maintain strong competencies in the US GAAP and Statutory accounting requirements for reinsurance activities, and also must stay abreast of current trends and regulatory changes in the industry, and recommend alternative business practices, procedures, solutions, and strategies based upon best practice research.
  • Develops solutions and implements actions to resolve problems and ensure customer satisfaction; reviews processes and procedures to streamline activities to enhance service turnaround time, productivity, and quality; coordinates overall workflow of the department and ensures that workflow processes facilitate effective and efficient use of corporate resources and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • This role is part of the Company’s Financial Shared Service team. At times, this position will support other financial accounting or reporting activities beyond reinsurance which may include, but is not limited to: US GAAP reporting and analysis or Statutory reporting and analysis, reporting requirements of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, general ledger account reconciliations, US GAAP or Statutory audit support activities, Kaizen (continuous improvement) activities, projects required by the department, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Work Designation – Depending on your location within the continental US, this role may be hybrid or remote.

  • If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be hybrid. This means you will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week. You will work from your home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion of the work week. Details of this schedule will be discussed with your leadership.
  • If you live more than 50 miles from the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be remote. This means you will be expected to work from your home, within the continental US. If the role is remote, there may be occasions that you are requested to come to the office based on business need. Any requests to come to the office would be communicated with you in advance
